Chapter 11: The Woman My Mother Hid From Us
Detective Harris refused to let me go anywhere alone.
He arranged for Officer Lewis to accompany us to the location Laura had sent.
Dad insisted on coming.
"I've lost enough people," he said.
"I'm not losing another.""
Michael laughed from the dining room.
"Always the hero, Marcus.""
Dad turned.
"One more word, and I'll forget we're brothers.""
Detective Harris ordered Michael to remain with the officers.
Then we drove across Atlanta to an old apartment building near Grant Park.
Laura was waiting outside.
She looked older than the woman in the photograph, but the resemblance to my mother was unmistakable.
When she saw me, she covered her mouth.
"Oh, Ethan.""
She walked toward me.
I didn't know whether to hug her.
She was a stranger.
Yet she had my mother's eyes.
"I'm Laura," she whispered.
"Your mother's sister.""
I nodded.
"Why did Mom never tell me about you?""
Laura looked down.
"Because I made a terrible mistake.""
Dad approached.
"What's going on? What happened to my wife?""
Laura looked at him.
"Margaret asked me to protect Ethan. I failed her.""
She led us upstairs to a small apartment.
Inside, everything was carefully organized. There were folders stacked beside a laptop, photographs covering one wall, and a locked metal cabinet near the bedroom.
Laura opened the cabinet.
She removed a thick envelope.
"These are the original medical records from your mother's final hospitalization.""
Detective Harris examined them.
"How did you obtain these?""
"I made copies before someone altered the hospital file.""
She handed me another envelope.
"This is from Margaret.""
My hands trembled.
My name was written across the front.
For Ethan. When he is old enough to know the truth.
I opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
My mother's handwriting.
I began reading.
My sweet boy,
If you're reading this, I wasn't able to keep my promise to watch you grow into a man.
I stopped.
My vision blurred.
Dad stood beside me, his eyes fixed on the paper.
I continued.
I need you to know that none of this is your fault. The people who have hurt our family are people I once loved and trusted.
Your father is not the man you think he is, but he is also not the monster they will try to make him.
I looked up.
Dad lowered his head.
I continued.
Twenty-five years ago, your grandfather discovered that Michael had been stealing company money. Daniel knew about it. Your father discovered the truth shortly before the night your grandfather died.
I looked at Dad.
"What does this mean?""
Laura answered quietly.
The letter continued.
Marcus wanted to report his brother. But Daniel convinced him that exposing Michael would destroy the family business. Your father made a terrible decision. He stayed silent.
Dad closed his eyes.
"I was twenty-three.""
Laura nodded.
"Margaret knew.""
I continued.
Your father did not kill your grandfather. But he helped cover up the truth. And for years, he allowed his brother to benefit from that silence.
I lowered the letter.
Dad sat down.
"I thought I was protecting my mother," he whispered.
"I thought if I reported Michael, everything our family had built would collapse.""
Laura placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Margaret believed you regretted it.""
I looked at the letter again.
*When I discovered that Michael was trying to take your inheritance, I confronted him. He threatened me. Daniel was involved.
Robert was involved. Vanessa was involved.*
But there is one person who knows exactly what happened in my hospital room.
I stopped.
The next sentence was underlined.
It was not Vanessa who administered the final medication.
I looked at Laura.
"Who was it?""
She opened a second folder.
Inside was a hospital security photograph.
A nurse stood beside my mother's bed, holding a medication tray.
The image was blurry, but the woman's face was visible.
Laura pointed.
"Her name was Patricia Miller.""
I shook my head.
"Patricia said Vanessa brought Mom the glass.""
"She did. But Patricia administered the medication.""
Dad looked horrified.
"Why?""
Laura's voice trembled.
"Because Patricia was being paid.""
Detective Harris took the photograph.
"Do you have proof?""
Laura nodded.
She opened her laptop.
A recording began playing.
Patricia's voice filled the apartment.
"I didn't know the medication would cause that reaction. Michael told me it was part of her treatment.""
Another voice answered.
Vanessa.
"Then why did she stop breathing?""
Patricia started crying.
"Because the dosage was wrong!""
Vanessa's voice became colder.
"Listen to me. You never saw me. You never heard anything. If you speak, your daughter will lose everything.""
The recording ended.
Dad covered his face.
My mother hadn't simply died from cancer.
Someone had interfered with her treatment.
Detective Harris immediately contacted his colleagues.
Then Laura pulled another document from the folder.
"There's something else.""
It was a bank transfer confirmation.
A payment of $150,000 had been sent to Patricia Miller three days before my mother's death.
The sender was Vantage Holdings.
Vanessa's company.
Dad stared at the document.
"She paid the nurse.""
Laura nodded.
"Yes.""
I felt sick.
"Then why did Patricia contact me?""
Laura hesitated.
"Because she recently discovered something Michael had hidden from her.""
"What?""
Laura turned the laptop toward me.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Patricia standing beside a young woman.
The woman was holding a baby.
On the back was a handwritten note:
Patricia and her daughter, Emily.
Laura whispered:
"Emily is not Patricia's daughter.""
I frowned.
"Then who is she?""
Laura looked at Dad.
"She's Margaret's daughter.""
My entire body went cold.
"What?""
Laura's eyes filled with tears.
"Your mother had another child before you were born. A little girl she was told had died shortly after birth.""
I couldn't breathe.
Dad stared at her.
"Why would Margaret never tell me?""
Laura opened another document.
It was a birth certificate.
The mother's name was Margaret Bennett.
The father's name was Marcus Carter.
And the child was listed as Emily Carter.
My sister.
Alive.
Somewhere in Atlanta.

Then Laura said the words that shattered everything.
"Patricia didn't just help Michael steal your mother's inheritance. She raised the daughter your mother spent eighteen years trying to find.""
