Chapter 9: The Truth About Mia’s Future

My father didn’t sleep that night.

Neither did I.

The words from Rachel kept repeating in my mind.

The second trust.

What was it?

Why had nobody told me?

The next morning, Adrian called his attorney immediately.

An hour later, we were sitting in a private office downtown.

The attorney, Michael, placed several files on the table.

“I should have explained this years ago.””

My father looked at him.

“Why didn’t you?””

“Because the second trust was created under very specific conditions.””

I leaned forward.

“What conditions?””

Michael opened the file.

“When Mia’s mother passed away, her parents left an inheritance for Mia.””

My heart stopped.

“Her grandparents?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at my father.

“You never told me.””

“I didn’t know the details.””

Michael continued.

“The inheritance was protected until Mia turned eighteen.””

“So Vanessa couldn’t touch it.””

“Correct.””

Then I understood.

The trust wasn’t just money.

It was security.

A future.

Something created to protect my daughter.

Michael continued.

“But there was one condition.””

My father looked concerned.

“What condition?””

“That the child’s legal guardian must demonstrate they are acting in her best interest.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Michael looked at me.

“It means someone could challenge guardianship if they believed the child was being neglected or manipulated.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa’s legal move suddenly made sense.

She wasn’t just trying to gain access.

She was trying to create a story.

A story where she was the protector.

And we were the problem.

“She planned this,” I whispered.

Michael nodded.

“Possibly.””

I looked at him.

“Possibly?””

He folded his hands.

“We need evidence.””

I thought about the cameras.

The hidden belongings.

The notebook.

Rachel’s documents.

“We have evidence.””

Michael looked serious.

“Then we need to preserve everything.””

When we returned home, Mia was drawing at the kitchen table.

She looked up.

“Daddy.””

“Yes?””

“Can I ask something?””

“Of course.””

She held up her drawing.

It showed me holding her hand.

Beside us was another person.

I looked closer.

It was her mother.

My chest tightened.

“I miss Mommy,” she said quietly.

I sat beside her.

“I know.””

“Do you think she would be proud of me?””

I wrapped my arm around her.

“She would be more than proud.””

Mia looked at the drawing.

“She told me once that family means people who protect your heart.””

I swallowed.

Because Vanessa had done the opposite.

That afternoon, Rachel sent another message.

This time, she asked to meet urgently.

When we arrived, she looked nervous.

More nervous than before.

“What happened?”” I asked.

She looked at my father.

“She knows I talked to you.””

My stomach dropped.

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

Rachel handed me a small envelope.

“She sent this to me.””

Inside was a single piece of paper.

A warning.

Not a threat.

Not something obvious.

Just enough to show Vanessa knew.

My father looked angry.

“She’s trying to intimidate you.””

Rachel nodded.

“But that’s not the worst part.””

“What is?””

Rachel looked at me.

“She told me she had one final move.””

I stared at her.

“What move?””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“She plans to make Mia believe you abandoned her.””

I felt the room spin.

“She would never believe that.””

Rachel looked at me sadly.

“She’s six.””

Those words hit me.

Because Vanessa didn’t need to convince the whole world.

She only needed to confuse a child.

On the way home, I called Mia.

No answer.

I called again.

Still nothing.

Then my father’s phone rang.

The number was from the mansion.

He answered.

His face changed instantly.

“What do you mean she’s gone?””

My heart stopped.

“What happened?””

He looked at me.

“Vanessa came to the house.””

May you like

I stood frozen.

“And she took Mia.””
