Chapter 6: The Secret In The Backpack

I stared at the envelope for several seconds.

“Mia?””

My daughter looked up from her coloring book.

“Yes, Daddy?””

I held up the envelope.

“What is this?””

Her expression changed immediately.

She looked nervous.

Not scared.

Nervous.

Like she had been keeping a secret.

“I was going to show you.””

I sat beside her.

“Show me now.””

She looked toward the door.

Then back at me.

“Is Vanessa mad?””

The fact that my daughter’s first concern was Vanessa’s reaction broke my heart.

“No one is mad at you.””

She slowly nodded.

Then she opened the drawer beside her bed.

Inside was a small notebook.

A child’s notebook with colorful stickers.

“I wrote things down.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She shrugged.

“Because I thought I would forget.””

My stomach tightened.

“Forget what?””

She opened the notebook.

The handwriting was messy.

Some words were written backward.

Some letters were missing.

But I could understand enough.

Dates.

Small memories.

Moments Mia thought nobody noticed.

“She told me not to tell you.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Mia looked down.

“Vanessa.””

I carefully turned the page.

“What did she tell you?””

Mia whispered:

“She said Daddy already had too many problems.””

I felt anger rise.

But I stayed calm.

“What else?””

“She said if I told you things, you would think I was trying to make her look bad.””

I closed my eyes.

Because Vanessa had not only hidden objects.

She had been teaching my daughter to doubt herself.

“What things did she tell you not to say?””

Mia hesitated.

Then she pointed at the notebook.

I read the next pages.

Small incidents.

A missing drawing.

A broken toy.

A school project that disappeared.

Every time, Vanessa had an explanation.

Every time, Mia stayed quiet.

At the bottom of the final page was a sentence written in bigger letters.

It said:

“I want Daddy to believe me.””

I couldn’t breathe for a moment.

I hugged her.

“You should have told me.””

“I tried.””

Her voice cracked.

“But Vanessa said nobody would believe me.””

I held her tighter.

“I believe you now.””

That afternoon, my father and I reviewed everything again.

The recordings.

The hidden belongings.

Mia’s notebook.

The pattern was clear.

But there was still one question.

Why?

Why would Vanessa spend years trying to make Mia smaller?

Then my father received a phone call.

He answered.

“Hello?””

His expression changed.

“What?””

He stood immediately.

“No, that’s impossible.””

I watched his face.

Something was wrong.

When he ended the call, he looked at me.

“That was my attorney.””

“What happened?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Vanessa filed a legal claim this morning.””

I frowned.

“A claim for what?””

My father looked toward the stairs where Mia was sitting.

Then back at me.

“She says she has been mistreated in this house.””

I couldn’t believe it.

“She’s accusing us?””

My father nodded.

“She’s trying to make herself the victim.””

The timing was too perfect.

The recordings appeared.

The truth started coming out.

And suddenly Vanessa was fighting back.

But then my father added one more detail.

A detail that made everything more complicated.

“She also requested temporary control over certain family assets.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

My father looked at the notebook in my hand.

Then at the security footage.

And quietly said:

“Because Vanessa was never trying to replace Mia’s mother.””

He paused.

“She was trying to remove Mia from this family completely.””

At that exact moment, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Is this Mia’s father?””

“Yes.””

There was a pause.

Then she said:

“I worked for Vanessa before she married your father.””

I stood up.

“Who are you?””

Her voice became quieter.

“I know what Vanessa did before she entered your family.””

I looked at my father.

The woman continued:

“And I have proof.””
