Chapter 7: The Woman From Vanessa’s Past
The woman on the phone didn’t say another word.
For several seconds, all I heard was the sound of my own breathing.
Then I asked:
“Who are you?””
“My name is Rachel Morgan.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But the way she said it told me she wasn’t calling for attention.
She sounded afraid.
“I used to work for Vanessa before she married your father.””
I looked at Adrian.
He immediately understood something serious was happening.
I put the call on speaker.
“Rachel, what do you know?””
There was a pause.
Then she said:
“Vanessa is very good at making people believe she is the victim.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“What does that mean?””
“It means what happened to your daughter wasn’t the first time.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“What are you saying?””
Rachel took a deep breath.
“When I worked for Vanessa, I was her personal assistant. I handled her schedule, her messages, and her private arrangements.””
“And?””
“And I saw how she treated people who stood in her way.””
The room became silent.
My father walked closer.
“What kind of things?””
Rachel hesitated.
“I need to meet you in person.””
“Why?””
“Because I have documents.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What documents?””
“Things Vanessa tried to hide.””
I felt a wave of anger.
“Why didn’t you come forward sooner?””
Her voice became softer.
“Because I was scared.””
The honesty in her answer surprised me.
“What are you scared of?””
Rachel didn’t respond immediately.
Then she said:
“Vanessa knows how to destroy someone’s reputation before anyone believes them.””
The call ended ten minutes later.
My father and I sat in silence.
Neither of us wanted to admit what we were thinking.
But we both knew.
Vanessa’s behavior wasn’t random.
There was a reason she always seemed prepared.
A reason she always had an explanation.
She had practiced.
That evening, Rachel met us at a small café across town.
She looked nothing like I expected.
She wasn’t dramatic.
She wasn’t angry.
She looked like someone who had carried a heavy secret for too long.
When she sat down, she placed a folder on the table.
“I didn’t want to do this.””
My father looked at the folder.
“Then why are you?””
Rachel glanced out the window.
“Because I saw your daughter yesterday.””
My chest tightened.
“What about her?””
“I saw the way she looked at Vanessa.””
Rachel lowered her voice.
“That wasn’t the look of a child who made a mistake.””
She looked at me.
“That was the look of a child who learned to be afraid.””
I looked away.
Because she was right.
Rachel opened the folder.
Inside were photographs, emails, and records.
Nothing dramatic.
Nothing that looked impossible.
But together, they painted a pattern.
“She did this before,” Rachel said.
My father picked up a paper.
“What is this?””
“A complaint from a former employer.””
I read it.
A woman claimed Vanessa manipulated situations to make others look responsible for her actions.
My father frowned.
“Why wasn’t this public?””
“Because Vanessa settled quietly.””
Rachel continued.
“She always does.””
I looked at her.
“What was her goal?””
Rachel answered immediately.
“Control.””
That word stayed in my mind.
Rachel showed us another document.
“This is why I called.””
My father read it.
His face changed.
“What is this?””
Rachel looked at him.
“Vanessa’s original plan after marrying you.””
I leaned forward.
“What plan?””
Rachel swallowed.
“She wanted to become the only person your father trusted.””
My father looked confused.
“Why?””
“Because she believed once everyone depended on her, nobody could challenge her.””
The pieces started connecting.
The hidden drawings.
The missing belongings.
The lies.
The legal claim.
Everything.
Vanessa wasn’t reacting.
She was executing.
My father closed the folder.
“Why did she marry me?””
Rachel looked uncomfortable.
“I don’t know everything.””
“Tell me what you do know.””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“She had a different reason for entering your family.””
“What reason?””
Rachel looked directly at me.
“She was trying to gain access to something that belonged to Mia.””
My heart stopped.
“Mia?””
May you like
Rachel nodded.
“And Vanessa believed the only thing standing in her way was you.””
