Chapter 8: The Family Secret
The drive home was quiet.
Too quiet.
My father stared out the window the entire time.
I had never seen him look so lost.
The man who always had answers suddenly had none.
When we arrived at the mansion, Mia was sitting in the living room with a blanket around her shoulders.
She looked up.
“Daddy?””
I smiled.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
She looked between me and Adrian.
“Did you find out something?””
I sat beside her.
“Yes.””
She waited.
But I didn’t know how to explain something so complicated to a six-year-old.
So I simply said:
“We found people who can help us understand what happened.””
She nodded slowly.
Then she asked:
“Is Vanessa coming back?””
The question surprised me.
“Why do you ask?””
She looked down.
“Because she said nobody could make her leave.””
My father froze.
“What did she say?””
Mia looked nervous.
“She said this house would be hers one day.””
The room went silent.
My father sat down.
“Mia, when did she say that?””
She shrugged.
“A long time ago.””
“How long?””
“Before my birthday.””
I looked at my father.
Something was happening.
Something bigger than we knew.
That night, Adrian searched through old family records.
Hours passed.
Then suddenly, he called my name.
“Come here.””
I walked into his office.
He was staring at a document.
“What is it?””
He pointed.
“This.””
I read the page.
It was a trust agreement created after my mother died.
My eyes moved across the words.
Then stopped.
Mia’s name was there.
“What does this mean?””
My father leaned back.
“When your mother passed away, I created a protected trust for Mia.””
“How much?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That told me enough.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“The trust is connected to your grandfather’s estate.””
I felt confused.
“What does Vanessa have to do with this?””
My father looked at the document.
“She found out about it.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“She knew Mia had this?””
“Yes.””
“And she wanted access?””
My father nodded.
“I think so.””
Everything suddenly made sense.
Vanessa didn’t just dislike Mia.
She saw her as an obstacle.
A child standing between her and something valuable.
The next morning, Vanessa appeared at the mansion.
But this time, she wasn’t smiling.
She walked through the front door with an attorney beside her.
My father immediately stood.
“What are you doing here?””
The attorney stepped forward.
“We’re here to discuss Mrs. Vanessa’s legal position.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You brought a lawyer?””
She ignored me.
“Adrian, I don’t want this to become ugly.””
My father laughed once.
“You already made it ugly.””
Her expression hardened.
“I have rights.””
The attorney opened a folder.
“Mrs. Vanessa is requesting access to certain financial matters due to her marriage.””
My father stared.
“No.””
The attorney continued.
“And she believes she has been unfairly treated.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
The woman who destroyed my daughter’s backpack was claiming she was the victim.
Then Vanessa looked toward Mia.
And her face softened.
Fake kindness.
“Mia, sweetheart, I hope you know I never wanted to hurt you.””
Mia immediately moved closer to me.
That small action said everything.
Vanessa noticed.
Her jaw tightened.
Then she whispered:
“This is exactly what I mean.””
My father frowned.
“What?””
“She’s being turned against me.””
Nobody answered.
The attorney closed the folder.
“We will see you in court.””
After they left, my father looked exhausted.
But then his phone buzzed.
A message from Rachel.
One sentence.
And it changed everything.
“She found out about the second trust.””
My father looked at me.
“Second trust?””
May you like
I stared at him.
“What second trust?””
