Chapter 3: The Recording Nobody Expected
The security room suddenly felt smaller.
Nobody spoke.
The only sound was the quiet hum of the monitors.
My father stared at the screen showing the new camera alert.
“Inside the house?”” he asked.
The security employee nodded.
“Yes, Mr. Adrian. The system detected movement near the west hallway.””
I looked at my father.
“Why is that camera recording?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Because we both knew something important.
The garden footage proved Vanessa lied.
But the new recording could reveal something much bigger.
Adrian pressed the button.
The hallway camera appeared.
At first, nothing happened.
Just an empty corridor.
Then Vanessa walked into view.
She wasn’t wearing the same fake smile she used in front of my father.
She looked angry.
Frustrated.
She carried a small towel and walked toward the laundry room.
My father leaned closer.
“What is she doing?””
I watched silently.
Then Vanessa stopped.
She looked around.
She was checking if anyone was there.
A strange feeling moved through me.
This wasn’t the face she showed the family.
This was the person she hid.
The recording continued.
Vanessa opened a cabinet.
She pulled out something.
My father’s expression changed.
“What is that?””
I didn’t know.
But then she spoke.
The security room speakers were quiet, but clear enough.
“I’m tired of cleaning up after her.””
My stomach dropped.
After who?
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
Then she said another sentence.
A sentence that made my father stand up immediately.
“She’s the reason this house doesn’t belong to me anymore.””
Adrian’s face became pale.
“Stop the video.””
The employee froze.
“Sir?””
“Go back.””
He replayed the last few seconds.
Vanessa’s words echoed again.
“She’s the reason this house doesn’t belong to me anymore.””
My father slowly sat down.
For years, Vanessa had acted like she loved Mia.
She bought her clothes.
She attended family dinners.
She told everyone she treated Mia like her own daughter.
But now we were seeing something different.
I looked at my father.
“Dad…”
He raised his hand.
“Keep watching.””
The footage continued.
Vanessa walked into the guest room.
She opened a drawer.
Inside were Mia’s old school papers, drawings, and handmade cards.
Things we thought had been lost.
Things Mia believed she misplaced.
My chest tightened.
“She kept them?””
My father didn’t respond.
Because Vanessa wasn’t throwing them away.
She was hiding them.
One by one.
Every little thing Mia created.
Every memory she made.
Vanessa placed them inside a box.
Then she whispered:
“Soon, nobody will care about a child’s little projects anymore.””
I felt anger rising.
But my father looked devastated.
Not angry.
Devastated.
Because he finally understood.
This wasn’t one bad decision.
This wasn’t a misunderstanding.
This was a pattern.
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
Then my father stood.
“Where is Vanessa?””
The employee checked the cameras.
“She’s upstairs.””
My father walked toward the door.
I followed him.
But before we reached the staircase, Mia appeared at the end of the hallway.
She was holding her ruined backpack.
Her eyes were still red from crying.
“Daddy?””
I stopped.
“Yes, sweetheart?””
She looked toward my father.
“Am I in trouble?””
That question broke something inside me.
Because she wasn’t asking if Vanessa was wrong.
She was asking if she was the problem.
I walked to her and hugged her.
“No. Never.””
My father stepped closer.
His voice shook.
“Mia, I need you to know something.””
She looked up.
“What?””
He took a deep breath.
“I should have believed you the first time.””
A tear fell from his eye.
But before he could say more, a loud sound came from upstairs.
A door opening.
Vanessa appeared at the top of the stairs.
She looked down at us.
Then she noticed the security employee holding the tablet.
Her face changed.
For the first time, she looked afraid.
May you like
And then she said three words that revealed she knew exactly what we had found.
“You watched everything.””
