Chapter 11: The Secret Vanessa Wanted To Use
The drive to the lake house felt endless.
Every second felt like a minute.
Every mile felt like an hour.
My father sat beside me, staring straight ahead.
Neither of us spoke.
Because we both knew Vanessa’s last words were intentional.
She wanted to hurt us.
But more importantly, she wanted to hurt Mia.
“She knows something,” my father finally said.
I looked at him.
“What?””
“About your past.””
I swallowed.
“I don’t know what she found.””
My father looked at me carefully.
“Is there something you never told me?””
I stayed quiet.
Not because I wanted to hide anything.
Because I had spent years trying to protect Mia from pain.
But Vanessa had found the one thing I never wanted my daughter to question.
Her mother.
“My wife didn’t leave because she stopped loving us.””
My father nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“She got sick after Mia was born.””
His expression softened.
“She never wanted Mia to see how much she was struggling.””
I looked out the window.
“She made me promise I would always tell Mia she was loved.””
My voice cracked.
“That she wasn’t abandoned.””
My father reached over and touched my shoulder.
“You kept that promise.””
“But Vanessa could twist it.””
I looked at him.
“She could tell Mia her mother left because of me.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“She would use anything.””
When we reached the lake house, Vanessa’s car was parked outside.
The house was silent.
Too silent.
I stepped out.
“Mia!””
A few seconds passed.
Then I heard something.
“Daddy?””
My heart almost stopped.
I ran inside.
Mia was sitting on the couch.
Vanessa was beside her.
But the moment Mia saw me, she stood up.
“Daddy!””
She ran toward me.
I hugged her tightly.
“You’re okay.””
She held onto me.
“I knew you would come.””
Those words almost broke me.
Because she never doubted me.
Not once.
Behind her, Vanessa stood.
Calm.
Controlled.
“I wasn’t hurting her.””
I turned.
“You took my daughter.””
“I was protecting her.””
“From what?””
Vanessa smiled slightly.
“From lies.””
My father stepped forward.
“You have no right.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You still don’t understand.””
She walked toward the table.
A folder sat there.
Inside were old documents.
My stomach dropped.
“Where did you get those?””
She smiled.
“Everyone has secrets.””
Mia looked confused.
“Daddy?””
I immediately moved closer to her.
“Don’t worry, sweetheart.””
Vanessa opened the folder.
“She deserves to know why her mother disappeared.””
I looked at her.
“Stop.””
“No.””
Her voice became colder.
“You built this perfect story around yourself.””
My father interrupted.
“Enough.””
But Vanessa continued.
“You made everyone believe you were the devoted father who sacrificed everything.””
She looked at Mia.
“But nobody told you the truth.””
Mia looked at me.
“What truth?””
I knelt beside her.
“Mia, your mother loved you.””
Vanessa laughed softly.
“There it is.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“You always say that.””
“Because it’s true.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Is it?””
The room went quiet.
Then she placed a document on the table.
A hospital record.
I didn’t need to read it.
I knew what it was.
But Vanessa didn’t know the whole story.
She only knew enough to cause damage.
“You never told her,” Vanessa said.
I stood.
“Because she was a child.””
Mia looked between us.
“Daddy?””
I took a breath.
“Mia, your mommy loved you more than anything.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“And why did she leave?””
Mia froze.
That question hurt.
Because it was exactly what I feared.
I turned toward Vanessa.
“Do not do this.””
But she smiled.
Because she thought she had won.
Then my father spoke.
A sentence that changed everything.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
“You made one mistake.””
“What?””
“You found the documents.””
He paused.
“But you didn’t find the whole story.””
Vanessa’s smile faded.
My father looked at me.
“Tell her.””
I looked at Mia.
Then at Vanessa.
May you like
And I finally understood.
The secret Vanessa planned to use against me was the same secret that could destroy her.
