Chapter 14: The Last Piece Of Evidence
The old garden looked different at night.
During the day, it was beautiful.
Full of flowers.
Sunlight.
Peace.
But under the darkness, it felt like a place where secrets waited.
My father and I walked toward the far end of the property.
The area had been abandoned for years.
The old stone path was covered with leaves.
Then we saw him.
A man standing beneath the trees.
Older than the photograph.
But unmistakable.
“Daniel?””
The man looked at us.
Then smiled sadly.
“Adrian.””
My father stopped.
For several seconds, neither of them moved.
Then my father walked forward.
“You’re alive.””
Daniel nodded.
“I never wanted to disappear.””
“Then why?””
Daniel looked toward the mansion.
“Because I found something dangerous.””
I stepped forward.
“About Vanessa?””
His expression changed.
“Yes.””
My father looked angry.
“You knew?””
“I knew enough.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel sighed.
“Because Vanessa knew I was watching.””
He reached into his coat.
“I tried to warn you.””
He handed my father an envelope.
Inside were old documents.
Records.
Notes.
Everything connecting Vanessa to her previous actions.
My father looked through them.
“She planned this from the beginning.””
Daniel nodded.
“She studied your family.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“She learned everyone’s weaknesses.””
My stomach tightened.
“She knew my father would protect Mia.””
“Yes.””
“She knew I would fight for my daughter.””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at me.
“And she knew your biggest weakness.””
I swallowed.
“What?””
“Your guilt.””
The words hit me.
Because they were true.
After Mia’s mother died, I spent years blaming myself.
For not saving her.
For not doing more.
Vanessa knew that.
She knew I would avoid conflict if I thought it protected Mia.
“She used your pain against you,” Daniel said.
My father looked at the documents.
“Is there enough here?””
Daniel nodded.
“There is.””
“Enough to prove everything?””
“Yes.””
A sense of relief moved through me.
But Daniel’s expression remained serious.
“There’s one more thing.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Vanessa didn’t just want the inheritance.””
My father looked up.
“Then what did she want?””
Daniel stared at the mansion.
“Control over the entire family.””
The next morning, we met with the attorneys.
The evidence was overwhelming.
The recordings.
The hidden belongings.
Rachel’s testimony.
Daniel’s documents.
Every piece connected.
Vanessa had built her entire plan around one assumption.
That nobody would believe a child.
But she forgot something.
Cameras remember.
Documents remember.
People remember.
That afternoon, Vanessa arrived for the hearing.
She walked in confidently.
She still believed she could control the room.
Until she saw Daniel.
Her expression changed instantly.
“You.””
Daniel looked at her calmly.
“Yes.””
For the first time, Vanessa looked afraid.
The judge entered.
The hearing began.
Her attorney presented their argument.
They claimed Vanessa was misunderstood.
They claimed she only wanted Mia’s best interests.
Then our attorney presented the evidence.
The garden footage.
The audio recordings.
The hidden belongings.
The notebook.
Mia’s small handwritten memories.
The room became silent.
Then Daniel testified.
Vanessa watched him.
And for the first time, her confidence disappeared.
After hours of testimony, the judge made a decision.
Temporary restrictions were placed on Vanessa’s access to Mia and family assets.
But the case wasn’t finished.
Outside the courtroom, Vanessa walked past us.
She stopped.
She looked at me.
“You think you won.””
I didn’t answer.
She smiled faintly.
“You still don’t know why I chose this family.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
She stepped closer.
Then whispered:
“Ask your father what happened the night Mia was born.””
My father froze.
Vanessa walked away.
I turned toward him.
“Dad?””
He looked away.
May you like
And I knew.
There was still another secret.
