Chapter 7: The Sister Who Took Everything
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
The name on the document sat between us like a weapon.
*Sarah Carter.*
My husband’s younger sister.
Michael’s aunt.
The woman who had stood beside me at Richard’s funeral and told me, “Evelyn, you’re family now. I’ll always protect you.””
I remembered those words.
I remembered believing them.
I slowly looked across the ballroom.
Sarah was sitting at her table, perfectly still.
She wasn’t shocked.
She wasn’t confused.
She looked like someone who had been waiting for this moment.
“Sarah,” I whispered.
Every person in the room turned toward her.
She stood slowly.
Her expensive necklace caught the light as she adjusted her dress.
For years, I had thought Sarah was elegant.
Graceful.
Strong.
Now I saw something else.
Coldness.
Michael stepped forward.
“Aunt Sarah, what did you do?””
She sighed.
Not like someone caught.
Like someone tired of pretending.
“Michael, you’re being dramatic.””
My son stared at her.
“Your signature is on these documents.””
She smiled faintly.
“And?””
The entire room went silent.
Michael looked confused.
“And? You forged my name.””
Sarah walked closer.
“I didn’t forge anything.””
She looked at me.
“Your father left behind a complicated mess. Someone had to make decisions.””
My stomach tightened.
“Decisions?””
I stepped forward.
“You stole from us.””
Her expression changed.
“Evelyn, don’t use words you don’t understand.””
The insult hit harder than I expected.
After everything.
After thirty years.
She still saw me as someone too simple to understand my own life.
I looked at her.
“I may not understand business.””
My voice shook.
“But I understand betrayal.””
Sarah’s smile disappeared.
Daniel, the man who worked with Richard, stepped forward.
“Richard knew about Sarah’s involvement.””
Sarah’s eyes narrowed.
“Richard was paranoid.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“He was careful.””
Sarah laughed.
“You all worship a man who is dead. You have no idea what he was really like.””
Michael’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t get to talk about my father.””
Sarah looked at him.
“Actually, I knew your father better than you did.””
That sentence made Michael freeze.
And I knew why.
Because there was truth hidden inside it.
Sarah had known Richard before me.
She had known the family secrets.
The business.
The money.
The things I never questioned.
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Her face softened for just a second.
Then something darker replaced it.
“Because Richard took everything from me.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
She looked around the ballroom.
“All these years, everyone thought Richard was the genius. The hardworking one. The man who built an empire.””
She laughed quietly.
“But nobody remembers who helped him.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Sarah.””
“No.””
She pointed at him.
“You were there. You know.””
She turned back to me.
“I invested in Richard’s company when nobody believed in him.””
My heart sank.
“And you think that gives you the right to steal from us?””
“I think it gives me the right to what was mine.””
Michael looked at the papers.
“You could have taken legal action.””
Sarah smiled sadly.
“Legal action?””
She looked at him.
“You think your father would have given me anything?””
I felt anger rising.
“Richard loved you.””
Her eyes flashed.
“No.””
The word came out immediately.
“He loved you.””
She looked at me.
“He built a life with you. He gave you everything.””
Her voice became bitter.
“And I got nothing.””
I shook my head.
“That’s not true.””
She stepped closer.
“You have no idea what you had.””
For a moment, I almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
Then I remembered the documents.
The lies.
The years of manipulation.
“You tried to take my husband’s last gift to me.””
Sarah looked away.
“Richard hid the company shares because he knew I would challenge him.””
Michael interrupted.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
He held up another page.
“Dad didn’t hide them because he didn’t trust Aunt Sarah.””
He looked at the document carefully.
“He hid them because she already tried once.””
Sarah’s face changed.
Michael continued.
“Twenty years ago.””
The room became quiet.
I looked at him.
“What happened twenty years ago?””
He looked at me.
“Mom, Dad found out Aunt Sarah had transferred money from the company account.””
Sarah’s expression hardened.
“That was a misunderstanding.””
“No,” Michael said.
“It was theft.””
I felt dizzy.
All these years.
All these secrets.
How many people had been lying to me?
Sarah suddenly grabbed her purse.
“This conversation is over.””
She turned toward the exit.
But Jonathan, the lawyer, stepped in front of her.
“I’m afraid it isn’t.””
She glared at him.
“And who are you?””
“The person responsible for making sure Richard Carter’s final instructions are followed.””
He handed her an envelope.
Sarah looked at it.
Then her face went pale.
“What is this?””
Jonathan said:
“A statement Richard recorded before his death.””
My heart stopped.
A recording?
Richard’s voice?
After all these years?
Jonathan looked at me.
“Your husband wanted you to hear it only after everyone who betrayed you was revealed.””
The room went completely silent.
Jonathan pressed a button.
And then…
my husband’s voice filled the ballroom.
“Evelyn, if you are hearing this, I need you to know something.””
I covered my mouth.
Tears immediately filled my eyes.
May you like
Because after years of silence…
Richard was speaking to me again.
