Chapter 11: The Truth About My Son
“No.””
Michael’s voice was barely a whisper.
“No, that’s impossible.””
I immediately stepped toward him.
“Michael.””
He looked at me.
His eyes were filled with fear.
Not anger.
Fear.
Claire lowered her gaze.
“I know this is difficult.””
“You don’t know anything about me.””
Michael’s voice cracked.
“You walk in here after thirty years and tell me my entire life is a lie?””
Claire didn’t argue.
Because she understood.
She had just shattered his world.
I reached for my son’s hand.
The same hand I held when he was a little boy learning to ride a bicycle.
“Michael, look at me.””
He did.
“I am your mother.””
His eyes filled.
“I know.””
“No matter what anyone says.””
I squeezed his hand.
“That will never change.””
Claire watched us quietly.
Then she spoke.
“Richard knew this was the hardest truth.””
Michael looked at her.
“What truth?””
She opened the envelope.
Inside was a document.
A medical record.
My heart sank.
“No.””
I remembered.
A hospital.
A cold room.
A doctor saying everything was fine.
A baby crying.
My baby.
Michael looked at the paper.
“What is this?””
Claire answered.
“The records Richard found after investigating Robert’s actions.””
Robert suddenly stepped forward.
“That’s enough.””
Everyone turned.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Claire looked at him.
“You knew this day would come.””
Robert’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
“No,” Claire said.
“You don’t understand what Richard left behind.””
Jonathan took the document from Michael.
“I can confirm this record is authentic.””
Michael looked at him.
“What does it say?””
Nobody answered.
So I took the paper.
And I read.
The words blurred.
But one line stood out.
A line that changed everything.
*Biological father information unavailable.*
I looked at Michael.
My son.
My baby.
The child I carried.
The child I raised.
The child I loved.
I looked at Claire.
“Explain.””
She took a breath.
“Richard discovered that Robert had interfered with the original records.””
Michael shook his head.
“Why?””
Claire looked at him.
“Because Robert wanted leverage.””
Michael’s face hardened.
“Over who?””
Claire didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“Over your father.””
The room became silent.
I felt dizzy.
“What does that mean?””
Claire looked at me.
“Evelyn, Richard knew you would never accept anyone threatening your family.””
I stared.
“Someone threatened my baby?””
Claire nodded.
“Years ago, Robert discovered a mistake in the company’s records. He used it to manipulate Richard.””
Michael looked between us.
“What mistake?””
Claire looked at the document.
“The mistake was that someone had access to information they should never have had.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Robert had people everywhere.””
Robert laughed.
“You’re all acting like Richard was innocent.””
I looked at him.
“What are you saying?””
Robert’s smile returned.
“Ask Claire why she disappeared.””
Claire’s expression changed.
Michael noticed.
“You left?””
Claire looked down.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She answered quietly.
“Because Richard asked me to.””
I felt a sharp pain in my chest.
Another sacrifice.
Another person leaving because Richard believed he was protecting us.
Claire continued.
“Robert threatened to reveal information about Michael.””
My son went still.
“What information?””
Claire looked at him.
“That your adoption paperwork was changed.””
The word hit the room.
Adoption.
Michael stepped back.
“No.””
I grabbed his arm.
“Michael.””
He looked at me.
“You knew?””
The pain in his voice destroyed me.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I didn’t.””
And it was the truth.
I would have remembered.
I would have known.
A mother knows.
Claire spoke softly.
“Richard believed Robert altered the records after your birth.””
Michael looked at her.
“So who am I?””
The question broke my heart.
I stepped in front of him.
“You are my son.””
He looked at me.
“You don’t know that.””
“Yes, I do.””
My voice became stronger.
“I know the first time you smiled. I know you hated carrots as a child. I know you used to sleep holding my finger.””
Tears rolled down my face.
“I know exactly who you are.””
Michael looked away.
Because he was trying not to cry.
Then Claire said something that made everyone freeze.
“Richard found the original records.””
Michael turned.
“What?””
Claire nodded.
“And he left instructions for them to be revealed tonight.””
Jonathan opened his briefcase.
“I have them.””
He pulled out another envelope.
The room held its breath.
Michael stared at it.
“Why tonight?””
Jonathan looked at him.
“Because your father knew the people who betrayed him would gather in one place.””
He handed the envelope to Michael.
“But there is one final warning.””
Michael looked up.
“What warning?””
Jonathan’s face became serious.
“Your father said the truth about your birth would not just reveal who your biological parents were.””
He paused.
“It would reveal who tried to destroy your family before you were even born.””
Michael opened the envelope.
And as he read the first page…
his face changed.
Because the name written there…
May you like
was not a stranger.
It was someone standing in that ballroom.
