Chapter 10: The Woman Richard Never Forgot
The woman standing in the doorway looked nothing like the enemy I had imagined.
That was the first thing that confused me.
I expected someone cruel.
Someone arrogant.
Someone who would walk into that ballroom and proudly claim what she believed belonged to her.
Instead, I saw a woman with tired eyes.
A woman carrying decades of pain.
A woman who looked at me as if she had been waiting thirty years for this moment.
“Hello, Evelyn.””
Her voice was soft.
Almost gentle.
I couldn’t move.
Michael stepped closer to me.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked at him.
“I’m Claire Bennett.””
The name echoed through the room.
Richard’s past.
The woman from the photograph.
The person everyone had hidden from me.
Claire looked at me again.
“I know you probably hate me.””
I swallowed.
“I don’t even know you.””
She nodded.
“That’s fair.””
Robert laughed.
A sharp, satisfied sound.
“Finally, everyone is together.””
Claire looked at him.
“You haven’t changed.””
Robert’s smile faded.
“Neither have you.””
Jonathan stepped between them.
“This meeting needs to stay calm.””
But nobody was calm.
Not anymore.
I looked at Claire.
“Why are you here?””
She took a slow breath.
“Because Richard asked me to come if the truth was ever revealed.””
My heart tightened.
“Richard asked you?””
“Yes.””
She reached into her purse.
“I have something for you.””
She pulled out a small envelope.
Not old like the others.
New.
Carefully sealed.
My name was written across the front.
Again.
Evelyn Carter.
I stared at it.
“How many letters did my husband leave?””
Claire looked down.
“Enough.””
The answer hurt.
Because it meant Richard had known.
He had known something like this could happen.
He had prepared for a day when I would discover everything.
Michael noticed my expression.
“Mom.””
I looked at him.
“I’m okay.””
But I wasn’t.
Not really.
Claire walked closer.
“I need you to understand something.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“Richard never stopped loving you.””
The room became quiet.
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was painful.
“Then why did he hide so much from me?””
Claire’s eyes softened.
“Because he was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked at Robert.
“Of losing everything.””
Robert scoffed.
“Don’t make him sound like a hero.””
Claire ignored him.
“Richard and I started the company together.””
I nodded slowly.
“I heard.””
“But when the company became successful, people changed.””
Her eyes moved toward Sarah.
Toward Robert.
“Everyone wanted control.””
Daniel nodded.
“That’s why Richard left.””
I frowned.
“Left?””
Claire looked at me.
“Richard didn’t abandon the company.””
She paused.
“He sacrificed it.””
Michael looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Claire answered quietly.
“Your father discovered that Robert and Sarah were secretly moving money out of the company.””
Sarah immediately spoke.
“That’s not true.””
Claire turned toward her.
“You were there.””
Sarah went silent.
The room changed.
Because silence was an answer.
Claire continued.
“Richard could have exposed them.””
“Then why didn’t he?”” I asked.
Her expression became sad.
“Because of you.””
I frowned.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“Richard knew if he fought publicly, your life would become dangerous.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does when you understand Robert.””
Everyone looked at him.
Claire continued.
“Robert didn’t just want money.””
She lowered her voice.
“He wanted revenge.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
Claire looked at Robert.
“Because Richard refused to let him control the company.””
Robert’s face hardened.
“You always loved telling stories.””
Claire ignored him.
“Richard knew the only way to protect you was to make everyone believe the company was gone.””
Michael looked at the documents.
“So he hid everything.””
“Yes.””
“And let Mom think they had nothing?””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
I felt tears building.
For years, I had thought Richard had left me struggling.
I had wondered why he hadn’t prepared more.
Why he hadn’t made things easier.
But maybe…
he had been fighting a battle I never saw.
I looked at Claire.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes filled with regret.
“Because Richard asked me not to.””
I closed my eyes.
Another secret.
Another person deciding what I could handle.
Claire whispered:
“He said you deserved a normal life.””
I looked at her.
“And did I get one?””
Nobody answered.
Because we all knew.
I had spent thirty years living beside a mystery.
Then Claire handed me the envelope.
“There’s one more thing.””
My fingers touched the paper.
“What?””
She looked toward Michael.
“Richard wanted his son to know the truth too.””
Michael opened his mouth.
But before he could speak, Claire said:
“Because the company wasn’t the only thing Richard hid.””
My heart stopped.
“What else?””
Claire looked at Michael.
“Your father discovered something about your birth.””
The room froze.
Michael stared at her.
“My birth?””
May you like
Claire nodded.
And the color disappeared from my son’s face.
