Chapter 4: The Friend Who Betrayed Me

The name on the document blurred before my eyes.

For a moment, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.

Then my fingers tightened around the folder.

*Linda Hayes.*

My best friend.

My neighbor.

The woman who had held my hand at Richard’s funeral.

The woman who brought casseroles to my house for weeks after I lost my husband.

The woman who sat beside me and cried while I told her how much I missed him.

My stomach turned.

“No,” I whispered.

Michael looked at the paper.

“Mom?””

I couldn’t answer.

The older man, Daniel, watched me carefully.

“Evelyn, I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

I looked up at him.

“You’re saying Linda was involved?””

Daniel slowly nodded.

“Richard suspected she was passing information to Robert.””

The ballroom suddenly felt too small.

All those years.

All those conversations.

Every cup of coffee.

Every time I told Linda about my life.

My hands shook.

“She knew everything about us.””

Michael stepped closer.

“Mom, what did she know?””

I stared at the contract.

“She knew Dad’s habits. She knew what we owned. She knew where his papers were kept after he died.””

My voice became quieter.

“She knew where I kept the things I thought were safe.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

For the first time since this nightmare began, she looked less confident.

“Michael,” she said softly, “this isn’t what you think.””

My son turned toward her.

“Then explain it.””

She hesitated.

That hesitation said more than words ever could.

Robert immediately stepped forward.

“My daughter has nothing to do with this.””

Michael laughed.

“Funny. That’s exactly what everyone says when they’re hiding something.””

The guests whispered among themselves.

I wanted to leave.

Part of me wanted to walk out of that ballroom and pretend none of this had happened.

But then I looked at the letter in my hand.

Richard had spent his final days trying to protect me.

Walking away would mean letting him down.

Daniel opened the folder again.

“There’s more.””

I looked at him.

“More?””

He nodded.

“Richard created a legal trust before his death. The shares were transferred into your name, but there was a condition.””

“What condition?””

Daniel handed me another page.

“The trust could only be challenged if someone proved you were incapable of managing your own affairs.””

My heart sank.

I understood immediately.

They didn’t just want my money.

They wanted to make me look helpless.

Old.

Confused.

Someone who couldn’t be trusted.

Michael read the document over my shoulder.

“They were going to declare you incompetent.””

The words hurt.

Not because I was afraid of aging.

But because someone had planned to use my age against me.

Vanessa looked away.

And that was when Michael noticed.

“Vanessa.””

She slowly looked at him.

“Did you know about this?””

Her lips parted.

“Michael…”

“Did you know?””

The room waited.

Finally, she whispered:

“My father said it was just paperwork.””

Michael’s face changed.

“You knew.””

“I didn’t understand everything.””

“You knew enough to stay quiet.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I was trying to protect my family.””

My chest tightened.

“And who was protecting mine?””

Nobody answered.

A memory suddenly came back to me.

Three months earlier.

Linda had visited my house.

She had sat at my kitchen table, drinking tea from the blue cup she always used.

“Evelyn,” she had said, “don’t you ever worry about what would happen if something happened to you?””

I remembered laughing.

“Everyone worries about that.””

She had smiled.

“No, I mean your finances. Your husband was always complicated with business things.””

I had trusted her.

So I told her.

I told her Richard had left me some documents.

I told her I never understood them.

I told her I wished Michael knew more.

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

“She used me.””

Michael looked at me.

“Mom.””

“I gave her the information.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

My voice cracked.

“I trusted her.””

Michael gently held my shoulder.

“That’s not your mistake.””

But I knew it was.

Not because I had done anything wrong.

Because I had opened the door.

Daniel looked toward the entrance of the ballroom.

“There’s one more thing.””

Before he could continue, the doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stepped inside.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that face.

I had seen it thousands of times.

Linda.

She walked into the ballroom wearing a simple black dress, holding her purse tightly.

Her eyes immediately found mine.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered:

“Evelyn…”

I felt something inside me break.

The woman who knew my deepest pain had walked into the room where my entire life had fallen apart.

Michael stepped in front of me.

“You need to leave.””

Linda looked at him.

“I came here to explain.””

“Explain why you betrayed my mother?””

Her face fell.

“I didn’t betray her.””

I looked at her.

“Then why is your name on my husband’s documents?””

Linda’s eyes filled with tears.

And then she said the one sentence I never expected to hear.

“Because Richard asked me to help him hide the truth from you.””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“What?””

Linda stepped forward.

“Evelyn, your husband wasn’t protecting you from Robert.””

She looked at Michael.

“He was protecting you from someone much closer.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

Linda looked directly at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“Your son.””
