Chapter 6: The Visitor After My Husband’s Funeral
I stared at the date written on the envelope.
Two days after Richard’s funeral.
I remembered that day perfectly.
The house had been silent.
Too silent.
For thirty years, Richard’s footsteps had filled those rooms.
His coffee cup had sat beside the sink every morning.
His jacket had hung by the door.
Then suddenly everything was gone.
I remembered sitting on the living room floor because I couldn’t bring myself to sit on the couch where he used to read.
And then someone came.
Someone who told me they were there because they cared.
Linda.
My fingers tightened around the envelope.
“Linda.””
She looked at me.
“Yes?””
“You came to my house that day.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked away.
“Because Richard asked me to.””
The room became silent again.
Michael looked between us.
“You never told me this.””
Linda shook her head.
“Because Richard wanted me to wait.””
“Wait for what?””
She looked at the envelope.
“For Evelyn to see the truth herself.””
I opened it.
Inside was a single page.
Richard’s handwriting.
But this time, the words were not a warning.
They were an apology.
“Evelyn,
I am sorry for every secret I kept.
I know you may hate me for not telling you everything.
But I need you to understand one thing.
I never doubted you.
I doubted the people around you.””
I swallowed hard.
My vision blurred.
“I spent my entire life trying to protect my family.””
The letter continued.
“But I failed to see that protecting someone also means trusting them with the truth.””
I wiped my tears.
Michael stood beside me quietly.
For the first time that night, he looked less like a man defending me.
He looked like my son.
The boy who needed answers too.
I kept reading.
“Michael is not responsible for what happened. But he must know the truth about his own choices.””
My heart stopped.
His own choices?
I looked at Michael.
“What does that mean?””
He shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
Jonathan, the lawyer, spoke softly.
“Mrs. Carter, your husband left additional evidence.””
He handed a folder to Michael.
My son opened it.
Inside were bank records.
Emails.
And photographs.
His expression changed with every page.
“What is this?””
Jonathan answered.
“Your father discovered that someone was using your name.””
Michael looked confused.
“My name?””
“Yes.””
He flipped through the papers faster.
Then suddenly he stopped.
I saw his face lose all color.
“What?””
I moved closer.
“Michael?””
He slowly turned the page toward me.
The document showed a company account.
A transfer authorization.
And a signature.
His signature.
My heart dropped.
“No.””
Michael shook his head.
“I never signed this.””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“Michael…”
Everyone looked at her.
He turned slowly.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“I was going to tell you.””
His voice became quiet.
“Tell me what?””
Vanessa looked at her father.
Robert looked away.
That was enough.
Michael understood.
“You used me.””
Vanessa started crying.
“No, I didn’t.””
“Then why is your father using my signature?””
“I didn’t know he would do this.””
Michael laughed sadly.
“Everyone keeps saying they didn’t know.””
He looked at me.
“Mom, I swear to you…”
I believed him.
Because a mother knows.
Even after everything.
Even after confusion.
Even after pain.
I knew my son.
But there was still one question.
If Michael’s identity had been used…
who signed the documents?
Jonathan cleared his throat.
“There is one more signature attached.””
He pulled out another page.
My eyes moved down.
And then I saw it.
A name.
A name I recognized.
A name that made my blood turn cold.
Because it wasn’t Robert.
It wasn’t Vanessa.
It wasn’t Linda.
It was someone who had been sitting quietly in the ballroom the entire time.
Someone who had watched everything unfold.
Someone who knew exactly what was happening.
Michael looked at the signature.
Then at me.
“Mom…”
May you like
His voice trembled.
“Why would Aunt Sarah do this?””
