Chapter 5: The Secret Richard Took to His Grave

I felt the world stop.

For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything.

Not the whispers.

Not the music still playing faintly in the background.

Not the sound of people moving around us.

Only one sentence repeated in my mind.

*Your son.*

I looked at Michael.

My little boy.

The child I raised alone after Richard died.

The man standing beside me now.

The man who removed his wedding ring for me.

“Linda,” I whispered, “what are you saying?””

She looked devastated.

“I never wanted you to find out like this.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Be careful what you say next.””

Linda looked at him.

“I’m not afraid of you anymore.””

That shocked everyone.

Even Robert looked uncomfortable.

Michael’s voice hardened.

“What did my father write?””

Linda swallowed.

“Richard discovered money missing from the company after he became sick.””

I frowned.

“Missing?””

She nodded.

“He thought Robert was responsible at first.””

Robert immediately interrupted.

“That’s a lie.””

Linda ignored him.

“Then Richard found another trail.””

She looked at Michael.

“He found transfers connected to someone inside his own family.””

My heart started pounding.

“No.””

I didn’t want to hear it.

I couldn’t.

Michael shook his head.

“This is insane.””

Linda reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept this because Richard asked me to.””

She handed it to me.

I didn’t want to take it.

But my hands moved anyway.

Inside was another letter.

This one was shorter.

And the handwriting was different.

Messier.

As if Richard had written it when he was weak.

“Evelyn,

There is something I have been afraid to tell you.

I believe someone close to us has been manipulating Michael.””

My eyes filled with tears.

I looked at my son.

Michael looked hurt.

Not angry.

Hurt.

“Mom, you don’t believe this, do you?””

I wanted to say no.

I wanted to tell him I trusted him completely.

But my voice wouldn’t come.

Because Richard’s letter was in my hands.

And Richard had never accused anyone without proof.

I continued reading.

“I don’t believe Michael understands what he has been involved in. Someone has been using him.””

I stopped.

A strange relief washed over me.

Maybe.

Just maybe.

My son wasn’t the enemy.

Michael saw my expression.

“What does it say?””

I looked at him.

“Your father said he didn’t believe you knew.””

His shoulders dropped slightly.

Linda nodded.

“That’s why Richard asked me to watch over you.””

Robert suddenly laughed.

A cold, bitter laugh.

“You people are unbelievable.””

Everyone turned toward him.

He adjusted his jacket.

“Thirty years later and you’re still blaming everyone except yourselves.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Robert.””

“No.””

Robert pointed at me.

“Evelyn, do you know why Richard married you?””

The question cut through me.

Michael’s expression darkened.

“Don’t.””

But Robert continued.

“Because he knew you would never ask questions.””

My face burned.

“You don’t know anything about my marriage.””

Robert smiled.

“Oh, I know plenty.””

Linda looked terrified.

“Robert, stop.””

He ignored her.

“Richard built a fortune, and then he hid it behind a woman who didn’t understand what she owned.””

I felt every eye in the room on me.

For years, I had wondered why Richard never wanted luxury.

Why he insisted we lived simply.

Why he always said money wasn’t the important thing.

Was he protecting me?

Or was he hiding me?

Michael moved toward Robert.

“You’re done.””

Robert looked at him.

“You think you’re a hero because you defended your mother today?””

Michael froze.

Robert smiled.

“You should ask her why your father never trusted you with the truth.””

Silence.

That sentence landed.

Michael looked at me.

And I saw the same fear in his eyes that I felt.

“Mom?””

I looked down at the letters.

Then at Linda.

“Tell me everything.””

Linda closed her eyes.

“When Richard discovered the money transfers, he found another problem.””

“What problem?””

She hesitated.

“Someone had been changing company records for years.””

Daniel looked at me.

“And the person had access to those records because…”

He stopped.

The ballroom doors suddenly opened again.

A lawyer walked in carrying a briefcase.

He looked around.

“Is Evelyn Carter here?””

Everyone turned.

I raised my hand slowly.

“Yes.””

The lawyer approached me.

“My name is Jonathan Miller. I represent the Carter family trust.””

He opened his briefcase.

“I was instructed to deliver this only after one condition was met.””

I frowned.

“What condition?””

Jonathan looked at Michael.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“The wedding had to be interrupted by an attempt to remove you from the room.””

My heart stopped.

Richard had predicted this.

Jonathan handed me a sealed envelope.

“Your husband prepared one final message.””

I looked at the envelope.

And before I opened it, I noticed something written on the back.

A date.

The date was two days after Richard’s funeral.

The day I thought I had been alone.

But apparently…

May you like

someone had visited my house that day.

Someone I trusted.
