Chapter 3: The Letter My Husband Hid From Me

I couldn’t breathe.

Not because of the crowd watching me.

Not because of the wedding decorations surrounding us.

Not because my face still burned from Vanessa’s hand.

I couldn’t breathe because I was holding the final words of the man I loved.

Richard Carter.

My husband.

The man who held my hand through surgeries.

The man who danced with me in our kitchen when our favorite song came on the radio.

The man who promised me we would grow old together.

And now his handwriting was telling me that the people standing around me had been hiding something.

Michael stood beside me.

“Mom, you don’t have to read it here.””

I looked at him.

“Your father wanted me to.””

My voice shook.

“He waited thirty years for me to know the truth.””

I unfolded the letter.

The paper was old.

The edges were worn.

Like Michael had carried it with him for years.

I began reading.

“Evelyn,

If you are holding this letter, then I am no longer there to protect you.

I am sorry.

I wanted to tell you everything, but I believed silence would keep you safe.””

My hands trembled.

Richard had never kept secrets from me.

At least, I thought he hadn’t.

The letter continued.

“Before I met you, I created something with Robert Whitmore. We built a company together. I trusted him like a brother.””

I looked toward Robert.

He looked away.

“Over time, I discovered Robert had been moving money away from the company. When I confronted him, he threatened everything I loved.””

I stopped reading.

My eyes moved to Vanessa.

She looked frightened now.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Afraid.

Michael noticed.

“Mom, keep going.””

I looked back at the letter.

“Richard wrote that he transferred ownership of his shares into my name because he believed Robert would come after him.””

I covered my mouth.

My name.

The company shares were mine?

That couldn’t be possible.

I had spent years cutting coupons.

I had repaired old clothes.

I had worked part-time after Richard died because I thought we had barely enough.

I looked at Michael.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes filled with guilt.

“Because Dad told me not to until I knew the right moment.””

“The right moment?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“Until someone tried to take it from you.””

The entire room seemed frozen.

Vanessa shook her head.

“This is insane.””

Michael faced her.

“Is it?””

She stepped closer.

“You’re believing a dead man’s letter over your wife?””

Michael looked at the ring in his hand.

Then he placed it on the table.

“I’m believing my father over someone who slapped my mother.””

Vanessa’s face turned red.

“You’re embarrassing me.””

My son’s expression didn’t change.

“You embarrassed yourself.””

Several guests gasped.

Robert moved toward Michael.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

Michael looked at him.

“Actually, I do.””

He held up the document.

“The agreement you forced me to sign before the wedding was designed to separate my mother from her inheritance.””

Robert’s jaw tightened.

“You signed it.””

“I did.””

Michael smiled sadly.

“But I never submitted it.””

Vanessa looked confused.

“What?””

Michael pulled out another paper.

“A lawyer reviewed it this morning.””

My heart raced.

“You planned this?””

He looked at me.

“I hoped I wouldn’t need to.””

His voice became softer.

“I hoped Vanessa would love me enough to respect you.””

That sentence hurt more than anything.

Because I knew how much Michael wanted this marriage to work.

I knew how much hope he had placed in Vanessa.

But some things could not be repaired.

A guest near the back of the room suddenly spoke.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

An older man wearing a gray suit stood up.

I recognized him.

He was one of Richard’s old colleagues.

“Evelyn?””

I stared.

“How do you know my name?””

He walked closer.

“Because your husband asked me to watch over you if anything happened to him.””

My heart stopped.

Michael looked shocked.

“You knew?””

The man nodded.

“Richard knew Robert would try to control the company through his daughter.””

Vanessa whispered:

“No…”

The man reached into his briefcase.

“I have something Richard left behind.””

He pulled out a small folder.

Then he placed it in my hands.

“Your husband wanted you to see this only when the right people revealed themselves.””

I opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A contract.

And one name written at the top.

Not Robert Whitmore.

Not Vanessa.

Someone else.

Someone who had been standing beside me for years.

Someone I had trusted with every secret.

I looked at the name.

And my entire body went cold.

May you like

Because the person who helped destroy my family…

was the last person I ever expected.
