Chapter 7: The Woman in the Photograph
“Sarah Collins.””
Daniel repeated the name quietly, as if saying it out loud might make it easier to understand.
It didn’t.
The photograph shook slightly between his fingers.
“Mom,” he said, looking at me, “who is she?””
I stared at the picture.
The hospital room.
The old wallpaper.
The tiny bundle in my mother’s arms.
And Sarah standing beside the bed with tears in her eyes.
A memory I had buried for years came rushing back.
“She was my sister.””
Daniel’s eyebrows pulled together.
“You had a sister?””
I nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Then why have I never heard about her?””
Because she was the reason for every secret.
Because she was the reason I had spent twenty years carrying a truth that never belonged only to me.
I looked at Michael.
“You knew this would hurt him.””
Michael didn’t deny it.
“I knew he deserved to know.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You knew this would make him question me.””
Daniel looked between us.
“Someone please stop talking around me.””
His voice broke.
“I just found out my entire life might not be what I thought it was.””
That was when I realized something.
The lies were no longer protecting him.
They were suffocating him.
I sat down slowly.
“Sarah was my older sister.””
Daniel sat across from me.
“Tell me.””
Jessica crossed her arms.
“Yes. Tell him.””
I looked at her.
She wasn’t asking because she cared.
She wanted a weapon.
But Daniel needed the truth.
So I gave it to him.
“Twenty-six years ago, Sarah had a baby.””
Daniel looked at the photo.
“The baby?””
I nodded.
“Was me?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
Daniel looked confused.
“Then why is Grandma holding the baby?””
I took a breath.
“Because that baby was supposed to be yours.””
The room became silent.
Daniel stared.
“I don’t understand.””
“Sarah gave birth to a baby boy.””
I looked at the photograph.
“She was young. She was scared. She had no support.””
Michael interrupted.
“And your mother took the child.””
My eyes moved toward him.
“That is not what happened.””
“Then explain it.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Mom?””
I closed my eyes.
“I didn’t take you.””
I looked at my son.
“I saved you.””
The words hung in the air.
Daniel didn’t speak.
So I continued.
“Sarah was sick after giving birth. She had complications. She knew she wasn’t going to be able to raise you.””
Daniel swallowed.
“You’re saying Sarah is my biological mother?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
His face changed.
Shock.
Pain.
Confusion.
“Then who are you?””
The question hurt more than I expected.
I had spent twenty years being his mother.
Not by blood.
But by every choice I made.
“I’m the woman who held you when you cried.””
My voice trembled.
“The woman who stayed awake when you had nightmares.””
“The woman who worked two jobs so you could go to college.””
“I’m the woman who chose you every single day.””
Daniel looked down.
And for a moment, I saw the little boy again.
But then Michael spoke.
“And the woman who kept you from your real family.””
I turned sharply.
“You disappeared.””
His jaw tightened.
“Because Sarah asked me to.””
Everyone froze.
“What?”” Daniel whispered.
Michael looked at him.
“Your mother never told you the whole story.””
I felt cold.
“What did Sarah tell you?””
Michael looked away.
“She told me she wanted you protected.””
Jessica stepped closer.
“And from what?””
Michael didn’t answer.
Daniel stood.
“No.””
He looked at all of us.
“I need the truth.””
Then his eyes landed on Michael.
“Why did you disappear?””
Michael was quiet for several seconds.
Then he said:
“Because someone tried to kill Sarah.””
My heart stopped.
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Michael pulled another document from the folder.
“A police report.””
I recognized the paper immediately.
But not the contents.
Daniel read it.
His expression changed.
“Attempted poisoning?””
I felt the room tilt.
Jessica looked at me.
“You knew.””
“No.””
My voice came out weak.
“I didn’t.””
Michael watched me carefully.
And I realized something terrifying.
He wasn’t just revealing secrets.
He was revealing them in pieces.
Exactly when they would hurt the most.
Daniel looked at me.
“Mom…”
“I swear, I didn’t know.””
But he wasn’t looking at me with anger anymore.
He was looking at me with doubt.
And doubt was worse.
Because anger can disappear.
Doubt grows.
Michael stepped forward.
“There’s more.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What more?””
Michael pointed at the photograph.
“Sarah didn’t just leave you with Elizabeth.””
He paused.
“She left you with a warning.””
My heart raced.
“What warning?””
Michael reached into his folder.
And pulled out an old handwritten letter.
The paper was yellow from age.
On the front was a name.
Daniel’s name.
May you like
And underneath it were five words that made my blood turn cold.
*Do not trust Elizabeth Miller.*
