Chapter 3: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
The room that had been filled with wedding music and laughter became silent.
Outside the bridal suite, guests were still waiting.
They had no idea the wedding they came to celebrate had already fallen apart.
Daniel kept staring at the screen.
At his father’s name.
At the impossible proof sitting in front of him.
“Mom,” he said quietly.
I almost didn’t recognize his voice.
It sounded like the little boy who used to hold my hand when he was scared.
“What?”” I whispered.
“Did Dad ever contact you after he died?””
The question shocked me.
I looked at him.
“Daniel, your father died when you were six.””
“I know.””
“Then why would you ask me that?””
He looked away.
“I don’t know.””
Jessica suddenly stepped between us.
“Because your mother has filled your head with lies your whole life.””
I turned toward her.
“Careful.””
She laughed bitterly.
“There it is. The threatening voice.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Jessica, stop.””
She froze.
It was the first time that day he had defended me.
Even if only slightly.
She noticed too.
Her expression changed.
“After everything I’ve done for you?””
Daniel stared.
“What does that mean?””
Jessica looked around the room.
Then she lowered her voice.
“You don’t want to do this here.””
Melissa crossed her arms.
“No. Actually, I think everyone needs to hear this.””
Jessica glared at her.
“You’re just a wedding employee.””
“And you’re a person caught lying on camera.””
The words landed hard.
Daniel picked up the tablet.
“Explain the papers.””
Jessica’s silence answered before her words did.
“Daniel…”
“Explain.””
She wiped her tears.
“They were just documents.””
“What documents?””
“Financial documents.””
My heart sank.
“Financial?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Mom, what does she mean?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
Jessica sighed.
“You never trusted me.””
“No,” I said.
“I trusted my son.””
Her eyes narrowed.
Then she smiled.
A cold, familiar smile.
“You really think you know everything?””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What are you talking about?””
Jessica looked at me.
“You never told him the truth, did you?””
My stomach tightened.
“What truth?””
She pulled out her phone.
For a moment, I thought she was going to show another lie.
Another trick.
But instead, she opened a message.
Then she turned the screen toward Daniel.
His expression changed.
“What is this?””
Jessica’s voice became softer.
“The reason your mother hates me.””
“That’s not true.””
Daniel looked at the phone.
Then at me.
On the screen was an old photograph.
A photograph I had not seen in twenty years.
A photograph of my late husband standing beside another woman.
And beside that woman was a young child.
A child who looked exactly like Daniel.
My hands went cold.
“That picture…” I whispered.
Daniel looked at me.
“Mom.””
I couldn’t speak.
Because I knew that photo.
I knew the woman.
I knew the child.
And I knew why Jessica had saved it for this exact moment.
She had not just planned to ruin my son’s wedding.
She had planned to destroy the one secret I had spent twenty years protecting.
Daniel held the phone tighter.
“Mom…”
His voice cracked.
“Who is that boy?””
I opened my mouth.
But before I could answer, someone knocked on the bridal suite door.
Everyone turned.
A man’s voice came from the hallway.
“Daniel?””
The blood drained from my face.
Because I knew that voice.
And so did Daniel.
May you like
The door slowly opened.
And the man standing there looked exactly like someone who was supposed to be buried twenty years ago.
