Chapter 11: The Enemy Inside the Family
Daniel read the message three times.
Each time, his expression became colder.
“They’re threatening you.””
I nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Michael looked at the note.
“This is exactly what I warned you about.””
Daniel turned toward him.
“You warned me?””
His voice was sharp.
“You spent twenty years gone.””
Michael looked hurt.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Michael didn’t respond.
Because he knew.
Everyone in that room knew.
Melissa picked up her phone.
“I’m calling security.””
Jessica’s name suddenly appeared on the screen.
Daniel stared.
“She’s calling?””
Nobody spoke.
The phone kept vibrating.
Finally, Daniel answered.
“Where are you?””
Jessica’s voice came through.
She sounded different.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Scared.
“Daniel, you need to listen to me.””
He looked at the threat note.
“You mean like you listened to me?””
“Please.””
The desperation surprised him.
“I didn’t know it would go this far.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Silence.
Then Jessica whispered:
“Michael lied to you.””
Michael immediately stepped forward.
“Hang up.””
Daniel ignored him.
“What did he lie about?””
Jessica took a shaky breath.
“He wasn’t trying to help you.””
My grip tightened.
“What is she talking about?””
Jessica continued.
“He wanted access to the inheritance too.””
Daniel looked at Michael.
Michael’s expression hardened.
“Don’t listen to her.””
Jessica heard him.
“He’s there, isn’t he?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“That’s why everything happened today.””
She sounded like she was crying.
“The dress. The accusation. The wedding.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“I was supposed to make you hate your mother.””
The confession hit like a punch.
I closed my eyes.
Even hearing her admit it hurt.
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“Why?””
Jessica hesitated.
“Because once you cut her off, you would sign everything over.””
Daniel looked at the documents.
“The papers.””
“Yes.””
Michael stepped closer.
“Jessica, stop talking.””
Daniel heard.
His face changed.
“You were both involved.””
Jessica started crying.
“I didn’t know he would hurt anyone.””
Daniel laughed.
“You lied.””
“I loved you.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You loved what I had.””
Silence.
Then Jessica whispered:
“There’s something else.””
Daniel waited.
“What?””
“The person who planned this wasn’t Michael.””
Everyone froze.
Michael’s face changed.
“What did you say?””
Jessica continued.
“He was following orders.””
Daniel looked at Michael.
“Whose orders?””
Jessica’s voice dropped.
“Your grandfather’s.””
I felt the air leave the room.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel looked at me.
“My grandfather has been dead for years.””
Jessica said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“Not everything you were told is true.””
The call ended.
Daniel stared at the phone.
Nobody moved.
Then Michael spoke.
“She’s lying.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Is she?””
“Yes.””
“Then tell me why she knew about my grandfather.””
Michael stayed silent.
That was enough.
Daniel stepped away from him.
“I don’t know who you are.””
Michael looked wounded.
“I’m your father.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You’re someone who knew my entire life was a secret and still used it against me.””
Michael looked down.
For the first time, he seemed old.
Broken.
“I made mistakes.””
Daniel’s voice was cold.
“Mistakes are forgetting an anniversary.””
He pointed toward the room.
“This is a choice.””
I watched my son.
The boy who once waited by the window for his father to return.
The man who had just learned that the people around him had been manipulating him.
Then Melissa suddenly looked at the tablet.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
She replayed the security footage from earlier.
“I noticed something.””
The screen showed Jessica entering the bridal suite.
Then Michael.
Then another figure.
A person wearing a dark coat.
Someone none of us had noticed before.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who is that?””
Melissa zoomed in.
The image became clearer.
My blood turned cold.
Because I recognized the person immediately.
Not from twenty years ago.
From yesterday.
The person who had visited my house.
The person who claimed to be a family friend.
The person who knew exactly where I kept Sarah’s old letters.
Daniel looked at me.
“Mom?””
I couldn’t speak.
Because the person on the screen was standing behind Jessica with a smile.
