Chapter 13: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

The adoption papers shook in Daniel’s hands.

I had seen him angry.

I had seen him betrayed.

I had seen him broken.

But I had never seen him this lost.

“Mom,” he whispered.

I looked at the document.

At the signature.

At the name written at the bottom.

My stomach twisted.

Because it was impossible.

The signature belonged to me.

But it wasn’t mine.

“I don’t understand.””

Daniel looked at the page again.

“Someone signed this pretending to be you.””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Michael stepped closer.

“Let me see.””

Daniel handed him the papers.

Michael read them carefully.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“You know something.””

He didn’t answer.

“Michael.””

He lowered the papers.

“The lawyer who handled this adoption…”

I waited.

“Was Caroline’s father.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared.

“So Caroline has been connected to my family my entire life?””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

I felt a chill.

All these years.

Every secret.

Every missing piece.

Every unanswered question.

And somehow, Caroline had always been nearby.

Daniel looked at me.

“Why didn’t you know?””

I shook my head.

“I was young. I was grieving. Sarah had just died.””

My voice broke.

“I trusted the people around me.””

Michael looked down.

“And someone used that trust.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“Who?””

Michael didn’t answer.

That was when I realized.

He knew more.

He had always known more.

“You knew.””

Michael looked at me.

“Elizabeth…”

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You knew something was wrong, didn’t you?””

He stayed silent.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Answer her.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“When Sarah died, she left instructions.””

My heart stopped.

“Instructions for who?””

“For me.””

I stared.

“She trusted you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Michael looked at Daniel.

“Because Sarah believed you were safer not knowing.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

He pointed around the room.

“Everyone keeps saying they protected me.””

His voice cracked.

“But all they did was build a life around me that wasn’t real.””

I wanted to tell him he was wrong.

But I understood.

From his perspective, his entire identity had become a question mark.

Michael placed the papers down.

“Sarah knew someone would try to use your inheritance.””

Daniel looked up.

“What inheritance?””

“The Collins shares.””

“I thought they were gone.””

Michael shook his head.

“No.””

He pointed at the documents.

“The adoption wasn’t just about giving you a family.””

“Then what was it?””

“It was about hiding who you were.””

Daniel stared.

“From who?””

Michael looked at me.

Then said:

“From your grandfather.””

The words felt heavier this time.

Because now they carried evidence.

Daniel looked at me.

“My grandfather wanted me hidden?””

I nodded slowly.

“Sarah believed he wanted control of the company.””

Michael added:

“And control of you.””

Daniel looked sick.

“But why?””

I took a breath.

“Because Thomas Collins had no legal heir except you.””

The realization hit him.

“My existence threatened him.””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at the papers again.

“So Caroline helped hide me?””

Michael nodded.

“But not to protect you.””

A silence followed.

Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.

Another message.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

I moved closer.

“What is it?””

He showed us.

A photograph.

Caroline standing outside a hospital.

Holding a newborn baby.

The date was written underneath.

The same date Daniel was born.

Below the picture was a message:

*Ask your mother why she never told you about the first baby.*

Daniel looked at me.

“First baby?””

I felt the room disappear.

Because there was one thing I had never told him.

One thing Sarah begged me never to reveal unless the time came.

And now the time had come.

“Daniel…”

My voice shook.

“You had a twin.””

Nobody moved.

Michael looked stunned.

Even he didn’t know.

Daniel stared at me.

“A twin?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where is he?””

I looked at the photograph.

At Caroline holding the newborn.

And the answer I had feared for twenty years finally became clear.

“I don’t know.””
