Chapter 14: The Brother Who Disappeared
Daniel sat down.
The strongest man I knew suddenly looked like a child again.
“A twin.””
The word barely left his mouth.
I sat beside him.
“I’m sorry.””
He looked at me.
“You knew?””
I nodded.
“I knew Sarah gave birth to two babies.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Because I was afraid.
Because every answer created another question.
Because I had promised Sarah.
But promises become complicated when the person you are protecting is finally old enough to carry the truth.
“Sarah told me one baby was taken.””
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“Taken?””
I nodded.
“She said someone from Thomas’s family took him.””
Michael stepped forward.
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
I looked at him.
“Maybe she didn’t trust you.””
The words hurt him.
But he didn’t argue.
Daniel looked between us.
“So I had a brother.””
“Yes.””
“And nobody told me.””
I lowered my eyes.
“I wanted to.””
“But you didn’t.””
The pain in his voice was worse than anger.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
He looked away.
“Everyone says that.””
I had no response.
Because he was right.
Michael walked toward the window.
“Caroline has him.””
Daniel looked up.
“What?””
Michael turned.
“I think she does.””
“How?””
“Because Thomas knew about the twins.””
My heart stopped.
“What are you saying?””
Michael looked at me.
“Sarah wasn’t just afraid of losing Daniel.””
He paused.
“She was afraid of losing both children.””
Daniel stood.
“So my brother has been alive this whole time?””
“I don’t know.””
Michael looked at the photo.
“But Caroline does.””
As if summoned by the conversation, Daniel’s phone rang.
Caroline.
He answered immediately.
“Where is my brother?””
No greeting.
No hesitation.
Just the question.
Caroline laughed softly.
“You finally know.””
“Where is he?””
“You sound like Sarah.””
Daniel froze.
“Don’t talk about her.””
“You have her anger.””
“And you have her blood on your hands.””
Silence.
Then Caroline sighed.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
“Then explain.””
“I saved you.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“No one believes that anymore.””
Caroline continued.
“Your grandfather was going to destroy both children.””
“Why?””
“Because one child could be controlled.””
She paused.
“Two could not.””
I felt a chill.
Daniel looked at me.
Caroline continued.
“I took your brother because I had no choice.””
“Where is he?””
“You’re asking the wrong question.””
Daniel clenched his fist.
“What question should I ask?””
Her voice became quiet.
“Ask who raised him.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“You mean…”
“Yes.””
Caroline whispered:
“Your brother has been closer to you than you ever realized.””
The call ended.
Daniel stood frozen.
Michael immediately grabbed his phone.
“Find the number.””
Melissa looked confused.
“Why?””
“Because Caroline just gave us a clue.””
Minutes passed as they traced the call.
Then Melissa looked up.
Her face changed.
“What?””
She turned the screen toward us.
The information appeared.
A name.
An address.
Daniel read it.
And then he stopped.
Because the name belonged to someone he knew.
Someone from his own life.
Someone who had been at the wedding.
Someone who had comforted him after his mother was accused.
Daniel whispered:
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Who is it?””
He slowly lifted his eyes.
“My best man.””
The room went silent.
“The man who stood beside me today.””
Michael stared.
“What’s his name?””
Daniel’s voice barely came out.
“Ethan.””
A memory flashed through my mind.
The young man who had hugged Daniel earlier.
The young man who said:
“Your family is my family.””
I felt sick.
Because suddenly, I remembered something.
A small birthmark.
A familiar smile.
The way Ethan always looked at me.
Like he knew me.
Like he had been searching for something.
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
“I need to see him.””
Michael stopped him.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
“If Ethan is your brother…”
He hesitated.
“Then he may not be the person you think.””
Daniel looked at the wedding ring on his hand.
At the life he thought he understood.
May you like
Then he said quietly:
“Neither was anyone else.””
