Chapter 9: Emily's Last Message
I barely slept that night.
The USB drive sat on Rachel's kitchen table while I stared at it.
Emily had written that message shortly before she died.
She had known something was wrong.
And she had tried to leave me a warning.
At seven the next morning, David arrived at Rachel's apartment.
He carried his laptop and a leather briefcase.
"Did you open it?""
I shook my head.
"Not yet.""
He examined the envelope.
"Good. We'll preserve the original and make a copy.""
He connected the USB drive to a secure computer.
There were four folders.
The first contained bank statements.
The second contained scanned legal documents.
The third contained photographs.
The fourth was named simply:
Michael.
My hands went cold.
David opened it.
There was one video file.
The date was two days before Emily died.
I pressed play.
Emily appeared on the screen.
She was sitting on our old bedroom floor, wearing a pale blue sweater.
Her face looked tired, but her eyes were clear.
"Michael," she began softly, "if you're watching this, something has happened that I couldn't prevent.""
I covered my mouth.
For the first time in years, I heard her voice again.
She continued.
"I need you to know that I haven't changed Caleb's inheritance. I haven't signed any document removing him as the beneficiary. Someone is trying to convince the bank that I did.""
I looked at David.
He was watching carefully.
Emily took a breath.
"Patricia came to see me yesterday. She said she had borrowed money from Caleb's account because she was going through financial difficulties. I told her she had to return it immediately.""
My chest tightened.
Emily looked directly into the camera.
"She became angry. She said the money would eventually belong to the family anyway.""
She paused.
"Michael, I don't trust the documents Daniel Cross has been sending me. I believe someone has copied my signature.""
The video continued.
"I tried calling Thomas, but he hasn't answered. I don't know who else to trust.""
I felt tears running down my face.
Emily looked toward the door.
Then she spoke again.
"If anything happens to me, please don't let Caleb's money become a reason for people to fight over him.""
She leaned closer to the camera.
"And there's something else. Vanessa Reed.""
I froze.
David looked at me.
Emily continued.
"She came to the hospital yesterday. She said she was a friend of Patricia's. She asked questions about Caleb's future and whether you would be willing to remarry.""
I couldn't move.
Emily swallowed.
"She asked whether Caleb would inherit the house if something happened to you.""
The room became painfully quiet.
Rachel covered her mouth.
The video ended with Emily looking directly at the camera.
"Michael, please protect our boy. He deserves a childhood without fear.""
The screen went black.
I sat motionless.
Vanessa had known about my family before I had ever met her.
She had visited Emily in the hospital.
She had asked about Caleb's inheritance.
And somehow, two years later, she had become my wife.
David closed the laptop.
"Michael, this is significant evidence, but we need to authenticate everything.""
I nodded.
"Can we use it to protect Caleb?""
"We can present it to the court and the relevant authorities. I'll also request an emergency review of the custody filing.""
Rachel was crying quietly.
"I can't believe Mom did this.""
I looked at her.
"Neither can I.""
Just then, my phone rang.
It was Thomas.
Emily's brother.
I hadn't spoken to him in almost three years.
I answered.
"Thomas?""
His voice sounded strained.
"Michael, I've been trying to reach you.""
"Why?""
"Because I heard Patricia and Vanessa have been moving money again.""
I looked at David.
"How do you know?""
"Because Daniel called me yesterday. He said you found Emily's files.""
I gripped the phone.
"Thomas, why were you involved in the original account dispute?""
He sighed.
"Because Emily asked me to investigate.""
"What?""
"She discovered that Patricia had taken money from Caleb's account. She wanted me to find out how much and where it had gone.""
"Then why did your name appear on the transfer documents?""
"Because I never signed them.""
I stared at the page Rachel had found.
"Are you saying someone forged your signature too?""
"Yes.""
I felt the pieces beginning to fall into place.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because Daniel threatened to accuse me of financial fraud if I spoke publicly. He said he'd make sure I lost my professional license and that Emily's estate would become tied up in court for years.""
I looked at David.
He nodded slowly.
"Thomas, do you have proof?""
"I do. I've kept the original emails and recordings.""
"Where are you?""
"Atlanta. I've been staying with a friend since yesterday.""
I stood.
"Come to David's office. We need to meet.""
Thomas hesitated.
"Michael, there's something you should know before we do.""
"What?""
"Vanessa didn't meet Patricia by accident.""
I closed my eyes.
"I know she knew about Emily.""
"No, Michael. You don't understand.""
His voice dropped.
"Patricia introduced Vanessa to Emily's brother-in-law almost a year before Emily died. They had already discussed the inheritance.""
I felt my blood run cold.
"Emily's brother-in-law?""
"Yes.""
"Who?""
Thomas took a shaky breath.
"Your father, Richard Bennett.""
I stopped breathing.
My father had died when I was seventeen.
At least, that was what everyone had told me.
I looked at David.
Then back at the phone.
"Thomas, my father has been dead for twenty-two years.""
"I know what you were told.""
"Then what are you saying?""
Thomas spoke slowly.
"Michael, I found a bank authorization signed by Richard Bennett. It was dated three months ago.""
I gripped the phone so tightly my fingers hurt.
"That's impossible.""
"I thought so too. Until I found the photograph.""
"What photograph?""
"The one showing your father outside Daniel Cross's office.""
I stared at Emily's picture on Rachel's table.
May you like
Then Thomas delivered the final blow.
"Michael, your father isn't dead. He's the person who has been receiving the money from Caleb's inheritance.""
