Chapter 5: The Evidence They Created Against Me

I picked up the photograph.

Caleb was standing near the school entrance, holding his backpack.

There was a faint red mark on his left cheek.

I remembered that day.

He had fallen while playing on the playground.

I'd taken him to the school nurse, who cleaned the scrape and called me to explain what happened.

Now someone had turned that innocent accident into evidence of abuse.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Who took this picture?""

She sat down.

"I don't know.""

"Don't lie.""

"Your mother took it.""

I slowly put the photograph down.

"Why?""

"She said we needed documentation.""

"Documentation of what?""

"That Caleb wasn't being properly cared for.""

I stared at the woman sitting across from me.

She had watched my son grow up.

She knew how much he missed his mother.

She knew he slept with Emily's old scarf tucked beneath his pillow.

And she had apparently decided that his grief could be turned into a weapon against him.

"Did you write this statement?"" I asked.

Vanessa nodded.

"Your mother helped.""

I read it.

According to the document, Caleb frequently returned from visits with me frightened and withdrawn.

It also claimed that I sometimes left him unsupervised while working late.

Every sentence was designed to make me look irresponsible.

"Did you really think this would work?""

Vanessa lifted her chin.

"Your mother said she had spoken to a lawyer.""

"Which lawyer?""

"Daniel Cross.""

The name meant nothing to me.

"Is he a family attorney?""

"Yes.""

I took pictures of every document.

Then I called my own attorney, David Miller.

David had handled my business contracts for years, and I'd trusted him with several important family matters after Emily died.

He answered immediately.

"Michael? Everything okay?""

"No. I need you to come over. It's urgent.""

I explained what had happened.

He listened without interrupting.

When I finished, his voice became serious.

"Michael, don't argue with her anymore. Preserve every document, every recording, and every financial statement. Don't delete anything.""

"Can she take Caleb away?""

"Not because she says so. But we need to act carefully.""

I looked at the closet.

"She's been locking him in a storage room.""

David was silent for a moment.

"Then the child's immediate safety comes first. I'll come over, and we can discuss the proper authorities and emergency legal protections.""

After ending the call, I went upstairs.

I opened Caleb's bedroom.

His dinosaur blanket was neatly folded on the bed.

His toy cars were arranged beside the pillow.

Emily had painted little stars on the ceiling when he was a baby.

I'd promised her that our son would always have a safe place to grow up.

I sat on the edge of the bed.

For the first time that evening, I cried.

I cried because I'd worked so many hours believing I was doing the right thing.

I cried because my son had learned to hide his pain.

And I cried because the people I'd trusted had made him feel unwanted.

My phone vibrated.

It was Rachel.

Caleb is asleep. He ate two sandwiches and asked if he could have another tomorrow. He says he's hungry all the time.

I pressed the phone against my forehead.

Then another message arrived.

Michael, there's something else. I found a mark on his back when I helped him change.

I immediately called her.

"What kind of mark?""

"Several small bruises. One near his shoulder. He said he bumped into something, but he got nervous when I asked.""

"Take him to a doctor tomorrow. Tell them exactly what he said. Don't pressure him to explain anything.""

"Already planning to.""

I hung up and walked downstairs.

Vanessa was on the sofa, scrolling through her phone.

When she saw me, she locked the screen.

"Are you going to make me leave?""

"Not before we establish what's happened and make sure Caleb is protected.""

She shook her head.

"You're overreacting.""

I looked at her.

"Do you understand that he thought I would abandon him?""

Her expression softened slightly.

"Michael, I never wanted him to hate me.""

"You told him his dead mother was the reason he didn't deserve nice things.""

"I was frustrated.""

"You told him I'd send him away.""

"I didn't think he'd believe it!""

I stared at her.

"He believed you because you were the adult he depended on.""

She started crying again.

But then her phone rang.

The name on the screen was Patricia.

My mother.

Vanessa looked at me.

I pointed toward the phone.

"Answer it.""

She shook her head.

"Please don't.""

"Put it on speaker.""

She hesitated, then accepted the call.

My mother's voice filled the room.

"Vanessa? Did you get the documents signed?""

Vanessa glanced at me.

"No.""

"What do you mean, no?""

"Michael found out.""

There was a long silence.

Then my mother spoke.

"How much does he know?""

"Everything.""

I stepped closer.

"Hello, Mom.""

A sharp breath came through the speaker.

"Michael...""

"Yes. It's me.""

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

"Did you help Vanessa steal Caleb's money?""

"That money was being managed for the family.""

"Did you help create false accusations against me?""

My mother lowered her voice.

"Don't do something you'll regret.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You're threatening me?""

"I'm trying to protect you.""

"From whom?""

She paused.

Then she said something I would never forget.

"From the truth about Emily.""

My entire body went still.

"What does Emily have to do with this?""

My mother sighed.

"There's something your wife hasn't told you. Something about the account, and something Emily discovered before she died.""

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face had turned white.

"Mom," I whispered, "what did Emily discover?""

My mother didn't answer immediately.

May you like

Then she said:

"Ask Vanessa why she was at the hospital the night your first wife died.""
