Chapter 4: My Own Mother Was Part of the Plan

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

I watched the video again, hoping I'd misunderstood the voice.

But there was no mistake.

The woman speaking to Vanessa was my mother, Patricia Bennett.

The same woman who had held Caleb in the hospital after Emily died.

The same woman who had promised me she would always protect her grandson.

I slowly lowered the phone.

"Vanessa, when did this conversation happen?""

She wiped her cheeks.

"Michael, please. Let me explain.""

"When?""

"Three weeks ago.""

I stared at her.

"Why is my mother involved in a plan to make me believe my son is dangerous?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Nobody wanted to hurt Caleb.""

I laughed once, without humor.

"He's been eating plain rice while your daughters eat steak. He's been sleeping in a closet. His shoes are falling apart. And you're telling me nobody wanted to hurt him?""

She looked down.

I called my mother.

She answered on the second ring.

"Michael! What a lovely surprise. Are you coming over Sunday? I bought Caleb those little chocolate cookies he likes.""

I closed my eyes.

"Mom, I need to ask you something.""

"Of course, sweetheart.""

"Why were you talking to Vanessa about making Caleb look like a problem?""

Silence.

Then a nervous laugh.

"What are you talking about?""

"Don't lie to me. I saw the video.""

Her breathing changed.

"Michael, where did you get that?""

"That's your first question?""

"Listen to me. Vanessa has been struggling. She's asked me for advice because Caleb has become difficult to manage.""

I looked at the closet.

"Did you tell her to lock him inside?""

"No!""

"Did you know she was taking his inheritance?""

Another silence.

My grip tightened around the phone.

"Mom?""

"Michael, that money was never going to solve anything. It was sitting in an account while the rest of the family struggled.""

I felt sick.

"So you knew.""

"Your wife needed help.""

"She's my wife. He's my son.""

"And what about Vanessa's daughters? Don't they matter?""

I glanced toward the dining room.

Madison was helping Caleb drink a glass of milk.

Ashley had placed her favorite stuffed rabbit beside him.

"They matter," I said.

"But they aren't entitled to steal from their little brother.""

My mother sighed.

"You've always been too emotional about that boy.""

I went completely still.

"What did you just say?""

"Ever since Emily died, you've treated Caleb like he's made of glass. Vanessa was trying to teach him that the world doesn't revolve around him.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"He's six years old, Mom.""

"Exactly. He needs discipline.""

"Does discipline mean starving him?""

"I never said that!""

"Did you know about the closet?""

She didn't answer.

I lowered my voice.

"Mom, I'm giving you one opportunity to tell me everything.""

Her response made my blood run cold.

"Your wife was trying to protect your marriage. If Caleb keeps being the center of everything, you'll eventually lose Vanessa.""

I ended the call.

Not because I had nothing left to say.

Because I was afraid of what I might say next.

A few minutes later, Rachel arrived.

My younger sister rushed through the front door carrying a jacket and a small overnight bag.

"Where's Caleb?""

I pointed toward the dining room.

She immediately went to him.

When Caleb saw her, he ran into her arms.

"Aunt Rachel!""

She hugged him tightly.

"Hey, my favorite dinosaur expert. Want to have a sleepover with me?""

He nodded.

Then he looked at me.

"Can I come back tomorrow?""

I knelt.

"Of course, buddy. This is your home.""

He whispered, "Will Mommy Vanessa be mad?""

I swallowed.

"That's not your responsibility anymore.""

Rachel looked at me with tears in her eyes.

She helped him put on his jacket.

Before leaving, she turned toward Vanessa.

"What happened to his feet?""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"That's between Michael and me.""

Rachel looked at the broken sneakers.

"No. Not when a child is involved.""

After they left, I locked the front door and returned to the kitchen.

Vanessa was sitting at the table.

Her expensive shopping bags were still scattered across the counter.

I placed my phone in front of her.

"Tell me everything about the money.""

She rubbed her temples.

"Your mother suggested that we move Caleb's inheritance into an account where it could earn better returns.""

"Whose account?""

"Mine.""

I stared at her.

"You transferred his money into your personal account?""

"Temporarily!""

"And the designer clothes?""

She didn't respond.

"The steak? The vacations? The jewelry?""

"Michael, I deserve to have something nice too!""

I leaned against the counter.

"You've been using my son's inheritance to finance your lifestyle?""

She suddenly stood.

"I have sacrificed everything for this family!""

"What sacrifice?""

"Your mother promised me that if Caleb went to live somewhere else, things would be easier. She said you might finally give me control of the household finances.""

I felt my heart pounding.

"Somewhere else?""

"She said you could send him to a boarding school or have him stay with relatives.""

"And you agreed?""

Vanessa looked away.

Then she said something that changed the entire direction of the conversation.

"Your mother said she could help us get custody of Caleb's inheritance if you were declared an unfit parent.""

I stared at her.

"How?""

Vanessa slowly reached into her handbag.

She pulled out a thick envelope.

Inside were printed documents, photographs, and several pages with my name on them.

I recognized the heading on the first page.

It was a petition concerning parental fitness and custody.

But what made my hands shake was the photograph attached to it.

It showed Caleb standing outside his school with a red mark on his cheek.

And beneath the photograph was a statement claiming that I had physically abused him.

My wife had been preparing to destroy my reputation as a father.

And she had someone helping her.

Someone who knew exactly where I lived, worked, and kept my son's records.

May you like

Someone who had been part of my life long before Vanessa ever entered it.

My mother.
