Chapter 11: The Letter Emily Left Behind

The following morning, I met David at his office.

Thomas was already there.

He looked older than I remembered, with tired eyes and a neatly trimmed beard.

When he saw me, he stood.

"Michael.""

I shook his hand.

"Thomas.""

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he pulled out a chair.

"I'm sorry I didn't reach out sooner.""

I sat down.

"Why didn't you?""

"Because I was scared. Daniel Cross threatened to destroy my career. And I knew Patricia had people watching the situation.""

I looked at him.

"Emily trusted you.""

"I know.""

He lowered his eyes.

"I should have done more.""

David placed a folder on the table.

"Let's focus on what we can establish. Thomas, show us the original documents.""

Thomas opened his briefcase.

Inside were bank statements, emails, corporate records, and several handwritten letters.

One letter had Emily's name on the envelope.

I recognized her handwriting immediately.

"Where did you get that?""

"She mailed it to me shortly before she died," Thomas replied.

"I kept it because I was waiting for the right time to give it to you.""

I opened it carefully.

Dear Thomas,

I don't know how much time I have left to resolve this situation. Patricia has admitted that she took money from Caleb's account. Richard is involved too, although I still don't understand how.

I've discovered that Vanessa Reed has been asking questions about Michael's finances and Caleb's inheritance.

I don't trust any of them with my son's future.

I paused.

My eyes blurred.

I continued reading.

If Michael ever marries again, please remind him that Caleb deserves someone who loves him as a child, not someone who sees him as an obstacle.

I lowered the letter.

David looked at me.

"There's more?""

I nodded and continued.

I've arranged for an independent trustee to oversee Caleb's inheritance. Nobody in the family should have the authority to withdraw it without proper legal approval.

I have also left instructions with my attorney. If anyone presents documents claiming I've changed the beneficiary, please have them independently examined.

At the bottom was a name.

Eleanor Hayes.

I looked at David.

"Who is she?""

Thomas answered.

"Emily's estate attorney.""

"Is she still practicing?""

"Yes. She's in Atlanta.""

David immediately wrote down the name.

"We'll contact her today.""

I returned to the letter.

The final paragraph was short.

Michael, if you ever feel that you've failed Caleb, remember that you don't have to be a perfect father. You only have to keep showing up. He needs you more than he needs money, a big house, or expensive toys.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Then David placed another document in front of me.

It was a handwritten note from Emily to Eleanor.

The note referenced an original trust agreement.

According to the document, Caleb's inheritance had been placed in an independently managed trust.

Patricia and Richard had never been authorized to access it.

Vanessa had no legal claim whatsoever.

I looked at David.

"Then where did the seventy-four thousand five hundred dollars come from?""

He studied the account numbers.

"That's what we need to determine. It appears the money was moved through an unauthorized account using documents that may have been forged.""

Thomas nodded.

"Emily suspected the original trust was being targeted.""

David picked up his phone.

"I'm contacting Eleanor.""

While he made the call, my phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

*Mr. Bennett, this is Richard. I know you have questions.

I have something that belonged to Emily. Meet me at the hotel at noon. Come alone.*

I showed David.

He immediately shook his head.

"No.""

"He says he has something Emily left behind.""

"Then he can provide it through legal channels.""

Another message arrived.

If you want to know what really happened the night Emily died, you need to hear it from me.

My stomach tightened.

David read the message.

"We'll arrange a meeting with witnesses and document everything. Don't respond yet.""

At eleven thirty, Eleanor Hayes called back.

David put her on speaker.

"Mr. Bennett, I represented Emily during the establishment of Caleb's trust.""

I leaned forward.

"Did Emily ever authorize anyone to withdraw money?""

"Absolutely not. She specifically instructed me to ensure that Caleb's inheritance would be protected independently of any future marriage or family arrangement.""

"Did she change the beneficiary before she died?""

"No.""

I looked at Thomas.

Eleanor continued.

"However, shortly before her death, Emily informed me that she suspected someone had submitted altered documents to the bank. She was extremely concerned.""

"Did she name anyone?""

There was a pause.

"She mentioned Patricia and Richard. She also mentioned a man who had visited her at the hospital.""

"Daniel Cross?""

Eleanor sounded surprised.

"Yes.""

I looked at David.

"Was he authorized to represent Emily?""

"No. In fact, I specifically warned her not to sign anything he presented.""

My hands clenched.

"Did she leave anything else?""

Eleanor paused.

"Yes. She left a sealed envelope with instructions that it should only be given to you if the original trust was challenged.""

I sat forward.

"Where is it?""

"At my office. I can bring it to David today.""

After the call ended, David looked at me.

"We're getting closer.""

I nodded.

Then Thomas's phone rang.

He looked at the screen and frowned.

"It's Richard.""

He answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice came through the speaker.

"Thomas, I heard you've been showing people old documents.""

Thomas stiffened.

"Richard.""

"I want you to stop.""

I leaned closer.

"Put him on speaker.""

Thomas did.

My father's voice filled the office.

"Michael, I suppose you've finally discovered that I'm alive.""

I swallowed.

"Yes.""

"Then perhaps we should meet.""

"Why did you steal from Caleb?""

He sighed.

"Because your mother and I made mistakes.""

"Seventy-four thousand dollars isn't a mistake.""

"You're emotional, just like Emily.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"Don't mention my wife.""

Richard laughed softly.

"Your wife? Which one? The dead one or the woman who tried to help us?""

David gestured for me to remain calm.

I continued.

"What did Emily give you?""

A pause.

Then Richard answered.

"Her final letter.""

"Where is it?""

"I'll give it to you when we meet.""

"Why?""

"Because it contains something that could change everything you believe about your mother's death.""

The call ended.

I looked at David.

He slowly closed the folder.

"Michael, I think we're dealing with something much bigger than financial theft.""

I nodded.

Because for the first time, I was beginning to wonder whether Emily's death had been surrounded by lies.

And I was about to discover that the person who knew the most had been hiding in plain sight.
