Chapter 3: The Money That Belonged to My Son

The video continued playing.

Vanessa was pacing in front of the closet, speaking quietly into her phone.

"Seventy-four thousand five hundred dollars," she said.

"That's what remains after the last withdrawal.""

I felt my fingers go cold.

"Who are you talking to?"" I asked.

Vanessa lunged toward Madison.

"Give me the phone!""

I caught her wrist.

"Don't touch her.""

For the first time since our marriage, I saw genuine fear in my wife's eyes.

Madison stepped behind me.

"I found it in Mom's deleted videos," she explained.

"I wasn't trying to steal anything.""

I turned toward her.

"You did the right thing by showing me.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Michael, you're misunderstanding everything.""

I looked at the phone.

"Then explain it.""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

I took the phone from Madison and replayed the recording.

The camera had captured a small notebook lying on the washing machine.

Its cover was blue.

I recognized it immediately.

It belonged to Emily.

My late wife had kept that notebook in her bedside drawer. After she died, I'd stored several of her personal belongings in a box in my office.

I had never given Vanessa permission to touch them.

"Where did you get that notebook?"" I asked.

Vanessa looked away.

"From the office.""

"Why?""

"I was organizing things.""

I walked toward the washing machine and picked it up.

The first few pages contained Emily's handwriting.

I recognized the rounded letters immediately.

She had written down Caleb's medical appointments, his favorite foods, and little milestones from his first two years.

Then I turned another page.

There were bank details.

A savings account had been established in Caleb's name shortly before Emily died.

I remembered it.

Emily's parents had contributed to it, and we'd added money whenever we could. It was intended to provide Caleb with financial security as he grew older.

After Emily passed away, I had entrusted the account paperwork to Vanessa because she offered to help organize the household finances.

I had never checked it.

I assumed it was safe.

My voice dropped.

"Did you withdraw money from Caleb's account?""

Vanessa immediately became defensive.

"That money was sitting there doing nothing.""

"It belongs to my son.""

"We're a family, Michael!""

"That doesn't answer my question.""

She folded her arms.

"I used some of it for household expenses.""

"Some?""

I opened the notebook.

There were handwritten dates and amounts.

Each withdrawal was recorded.

The entries stretched across six months.

I counted them twice.

The total was $74,500.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Where is the money?""

She rubbed her forehead.

"Michael, you're acting like I've stolen from a stranger.""

"You took money from a six-year-old child.""

"I've been raising him!""

"You've been spending the money meant for his future?""

Her voice rose.

"I have two daughters to support! Do you expect me to spend everything on Caleb while my girls go without?""

I stared at the designer shopping bags on the kitchen counter.

The expensive clothes.

The steak.

The strawberries.

The new shoes.

"Your daughters aren't going without anything," I said quietly.

Vanessa pointed toward the dining room.

"Those girls have been through enough. Their father barely contributes. I wanted them to have a good life.""

"And Caleb?""

She looked at him.

"He has you.""

The words landed harder than a slap.

Caleb was standing behind the living room sofa, holding his old stuffed dinosaur.

He looked at Vanessa, then at me.

I walked over and knelt beside him.

"Buddy, go sit with Madison and Ashley for a minute.""

He grabbed my sleeve.

"Are you leaving too?""

"No, son. I'm staying right here.""

He nodded slowly.

Madison took his hand and led him toward the dining room.

When they were gone, I turned back to Vanessa.

"Show me the bank statements.""

She shook her head.

"I don't have them.""

"Then we'll get them from the bank.""

"You can't just walk into a bank and accuse your wife of stealing!""

"I'm not accusing you. I'm asking where my son's money went.""

She laughed bitterly.

"You think you're some perfect father because you send money every Friday? You don't even know what happens in this house when you're gone!""

I stared at her.

"That's exactly what I'm trying to find out.""

She stepped closer.

"Michael, listen to me. If you make this a legal issue, you're going to destroy this family.""

I looked at the closet.

At the blanket.

At the empty water bottle.

At Caleb's broken shoes.

"Vanessa, you destroyed this family the moment you made my child afraid to ask for food.""

She started crying.

But her tears didn't change the evidence.

I took out my phone and called my sister, Rachel.

"Rachel, I need you to come over.""

"What happened?""

"Please come get Caleb for tonight. Bring his things. I'll explain when you arrive.""

Her voice immediately changed.

"Is he hurt?""

I looked at his shoes.

"He's been hurt for a long time. I just didn't know.""

After ending the call, I photographed the notebook, the closet, and the receipts.

Then I opened my banking app.

The joint account showed another withdrawal scheduled for the following morning.

The amount was $8,000.

The recipient was an account I didn't recognize.

I turned the screen toward Vanessa.

"What is this?""

She stared at it.

Her lips parted.

"Michael...""

"Whose account is this?""

She looked toward the front door.

For a moment, I thought she might try to leave.

Instead, she whispered, "It's not what you think.""

"Then tell me what it is.""

She shook her head.

"You need to understand. I wasn't the only person involved.""

My stomach tightened.

"What do you mean?""

Before she could answer, Madison returned.

She was holding the phone again.

"Mr. Michael," she said quietly, "I found another video.""

Vanessa turned sharply.

"Madison, don't!""

But the girl had already pressed play.

The recording showed Vanessa sitting in her car, speaking to someone on the phone.

I recognized the parking lot outside my office.

Then I heard her say:

"The account will be empty soon. After that, we just need Michael to believe Caleb isn't safe living here.""

A man's voice answered.

"Your husband will never agree to send the boy away unless we give him a reason.""

Vanessa smiled at the camera.

"That's why we're going to make him think Caleb is the problem.""

I stared at the screen.

Then the man spoke again.

"Your mother has already agreed to help us.""

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized that voice.

May you like

It belonged to my own mother.

And suddenly, I understood that Vanessa's secret had been much bigger than a stolen inheritance.
