Chapter 10: The Father Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

I couldn't speak.

For twenty-two years, I'd believed my father was buried in a cemetery outside Atlanta.

I'd attended his funeral when I was seventeen. I'd watched his coffin lowered into the ground. I'd spent years trying to accept that I'd never hear his voice again.

And now Thomas was telling me he was alive.

"That's impossible," I repeated.

Thomas sighed.

"I know how it sounds.""

"My mother identified his body.""

"Did you actually see it?""

I opened my mouth.

Then I remembered.

No, I hadn't.

My mother had told me the funeral home recommended a closed casket because of the condition of his body after the accident.

I'd believed her.

I'd never questioned it.

"Thomas, where is he?""

"I don't know his current address. But I have a photograph taken three months ago.""

"Send it to me.""

My phone vibrated seconds later.

I opened the photograph.

A man in a dark coat was standing outside a glass office building. His hair was gray, and his face looked older.

But I recognized the scar above his right eyebrow.

My father.

Richard Bennett.

The man who had taught me to ride a bicycle.

The man who had disappeared from my life when I was seventeen.

I dropped into a chair.

David leaned over my shoulder.

"Michael?""

I handed him the phone.

He studied the photograph.

"Are you certain?""

I nodded.

"I'd recognize that scar anywhere.""

Thomas continued speaking.

"Emily discovered that Richard was still alive shortly before she died. She contacted me because she thought he was connected to the missing money.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Why would my father steal from his own grandson?""

"That's what I was trying to find out.""

"Did Emily confront him?""

"She tried. He refused to meet her.""

I stared at the photograph again.

"Where did the money go?""

Thomas hesitated.

"Some went into an account controlled by Richard. The rest appears to have been transferred through Bennett Family Management.""

David immediately opened his laptop.

"Thomas, can you send us the documents?""

"I've already emailed everything.""

David began reviewing the files.

A few minutes later, he stopped.

"Michael, look at this.""

He turned the laptop toward me.

It was a corporate registration document.

Bennett Family Management LLC had three listed officers.

Patricia Bennett.

Vanessa Bennett.

And Richard Bennett.

All three had been involved in the company.

The registration date was four months before Emily died.

I stared at the screen.

"They planned this before she passed away.""

David nodded.

"That's what the records suggest. We'll need investigators to establish exactly what happened.""

My phone rang again.

It was my mother.

I answered.

"What?""

"Michael, we need to talk.""

"About your husband?""

Silence.

Then she whispered, "Where did you hear that?""

I laughed bitterly.

"That's your concern?""

"Please don't make accusations you can't take back.""

"Mom, I saw his photograph.""

She began crying.

"Richard contacted me years ago. He said he wanted to reconnect with the family.""

"Twenty-two years ago, you told me he was dead.""

"I was protecting you.""

"From your own husband?""

She sighed.

"Richard had debts. Serious debts. He disappeared because people were looking for him.""

"And you told your seventeen-year-old son that his father was dead?""

"I thought it was better.""

"Better for whom?""

She didn't answer.

I continued.

"Did Dad know about Caleb's inheritance?""

"Yes.""

"Did he take the money?""

"He said he was entitled to compensation for everything he'd lost.""

I closed my eyes.

"He's not entitled to one dollar belonging to Caleb.""

"Michael, you don't understand what Richard went through.""

"I understand what my son went through.""

My mother started sobbing.

Then she said something that made my blood turn cold.

"Richard wanted to meet Caleb.""

I stood.

"When?""

"Tomorrow.""

"Where?""

"At the house.""

I stared at David.

"Why?""

"He said he wanted to explain everything.""

I laughed.

"After stealing from his grandson?""

"He says he has something Emily left behind.""

I stopped.

"What?""

"A letter. He claims Emily gave it to him before she died.""

My heart began racing.

"Why didn't he give it to me?""

"I don't know.""

I ended the call.

David immediately shook his head.

"Don't meet him alone. If he has relevant documents, we'll arrange a safe, documented meeting through the proper channels.""

I nodded.

That afternoon, I visited Caleb at Rachel's apartment.

He was sitting at the kitchen table drawing a picture.

When he saw me, he smiled.

"Daddy! Look!""

He held up the paper.

It showed a house with three stick figures standing outside.

One was tall.

One was small.

The third had long hair.

"Who's this?"" I asked.

"That's Mommy Emily.""

I swallowed.

"And who's the little boy?""

"Me.""

"Who's the tall person?""

He smiled.

"That's you.""

I kissed his forehead.

"It's beautiful, buddy.""

Then he pointed toward the empty space beside the house.

"I didn't draw Mommy Vanessa.""

I sat beside him.

"That's okay.""

He lowered his pencil.

"Is Grandma Patricia still angry with me?""

I felt my chest tighten.

"No, son. But you don't have to see anyone who makes you feel unsafe.""

He nodded.

Then he whispered, "Daddy, if Grandpa comes back, will he make you send me away?""

I stared at him.

"Did somebody tell you that?""

Caleb shook his head.

"Mommy Vanessa said my grandpa wanted a different little boy in the family.""

I pulled him into my arms.

"Listen carefully. Nobody gets to replace you. Nobody gets to send you away because they want something that belongs to you.""

He hugged me tightly.

That evening, David called.

"We've located Richard.""

"Where?""

"He's staying in a hotel near downtown Atlanta.""

"Can we meet him?""

"Tomorrow, with the appropriate precautions.""

I looked at Caleb's drawing on the table.

"Then tomorrow, I'm going to hear the truth.""

David paused.

"Michael, there's something else.""

"What?""

"Richard has already contacted the court. He's claiming that Emily gave him legal authority over Caleb's inheritance.""

I stared at the phone.

"Can he prove it?""

David's answer was immediate.

"He's claiming he has Emily's original signature.""

And suddenly, I understood why my father had finally decided to come out of hiding.

May you like

He wasn't returning for his family.

He was returning for the money.
