Chapter 8: The Recording She Never Expected

We didn’t listen to the recording at the coffee shop.

Rachel insisted.

“Not here.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

“Because if Vanessa finds out we have this, she’ll try to destroy it.””

The confidence in Rachel’s voice bothered me.

Not because I doubted her.

Because I believed her.

We returned to the hotel before sunset.

The wedding decorations were still everywhere.

Flowers.

Lights.

A perfect scene waiting for a celebration.

But the wedding was already broken.

Maybe it had been broken long before anyone noticed.

Vanessa was sitting alone in the hotel room when we arrived.

She looked different.

Smaller.

Not because she changed.

Because the power she had always carried was disappearing.

Her eyes went to Rachel.

“You came.””

Rachel stopped.

“Yes.””

Vanessa laughed quietly.

“I knew it.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Knew what?””

“That she would eventually turn against me.””

Rachel looked hurt.

“Vanessa, this isn’t about turning against you.””

“Then what is it?””

“The truth.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Everyone loves that word when they’re hurting someone.””

I almost responded.

But I stopped.

Because for once, I didn’t need to defend myself.

Rachel placed the USB drive on the table.

Vanessa saw it.

Her face changed instantly.

Only for a second.

But enough.

Daniel noticed.

“What is that?””

Vanessa stood.

“Give it to me.””

Nobody moved.

“Vanessa,” Daniel said.

She reached for it.

Rachel stepped back.

“No.””

The room became silent.

Vanessa’s voice lowered.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

Rachel stared at her.

“I understand exactly.””

“No, you don’t.””

Vanessa looked desperate.

“You don’t know what it’s like.””

Rachel shook her head.

“I know exactly what it’s like.””

She pointed at the drive.

“I know what it’s like to protect you while you hurt people.””

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel connected the USB to his laptop.

My heart pounded.

I wasn’t ready.

I thought I was.

But I wasn’t.

The file appeared.

Created eight years earlier.

Rachel pressed play.

At first, there was only background noise.

Wind.

Footsteps.

Then voices.

Young Vanessa.

Young Rachel.

My breath caught.

Vanessa sounded different.

Younger.

But still the same.

“I didn’t mean to push her that hard.””

My entire body went still.

Rachel’s younger voice responded.

“You need to tell someone.””

“No.””

“Vanessa—”

“No.””

A pause.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“If everyone finds out, they’ll never forgive me.””

I covered my mouth.

The recording continued.

“She always gets everything.””

Rachel sounded angry.

“She almost got seriously hurt.””

“I know.””

“You don’t sound sorry.””

Another pause.

Then Vanessa said:

“I’m sorry it happened.””

Not:

I’m sorry I did it.

I’m sorry it happened.

Even eight years later, the difference hurt.

Daniel stopped the recording.

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa sat down slowly.

“It’s not what you think.””

I looked at her.

“What could it possibly be?””

She looked at me.

“I was young.””

“So was I.””

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I understand perfectly.””

She looked down.

“I hated feeling invisible.””

I stared at her.

“And you thought hurting me would make you seen?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Daniel closed the laptop.

“I need to ask you something.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“What?””

“Have you ever actually apologized to Emily?””

Her face changed.

“What?””

“Not because you were caught. Not because people found out. Not because you’re afraid.””

He looked at her.

“Have you ever apologized because you hurt her?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Rachel quietly stood.

“I think that answers it.””

Vanessa looked at me.

And for a moment, I saw something familiar.

The old Vanessa.

The one who could make me question myself.

“Emily, you’re really going to let this ruin my wedding?””

I stared at her.

And suddenly I realized something.

For years, I thought Vanessa’s greatest weapon was cruelty.

It wasn’t.

It was guilt.

She always made me feel responsible for the consequences of her choices.

But this time, I didn’t accept it.

“No, Vanessa.””

My voice was calm.

“You ruined your wedding.””

Her eyes filled with anger.

And then her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

The color drained from her face.

Daniel noticed.

“Who is it?””

She didn’t answer.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, she whispered:

“It’s the hospital.””

My heart stopped.

“What hospital?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And the fear in her eyes was different this time.

Because whatever was happening wasn’t about the past.

It was about something happening right now.

She answered.

“Hello?””

She listened.

Then stood up suddenly.

“No.””

A pause.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“You can’t tell Emily that.””
