Chapter 5: The Ceremony She Planned
Daniel read the message three times.
Like somehow the words would rearrange themselves into something less horrible.
They didn’t.
Vanessa saw his face and immediately reached for his phone.
“Give me that.””
Daniel stepped back.
“No.””
“Daniel, you’re misunderstanding.””
“Again?””
His voice was quiet.
That made it worse.
Vanessa stopped moving.
I knew that tone.
The tone someone used when they were no longer trying to win an argument.
They were trying to understand how everything fell apart.
“What did you ask the coordinator to do?”” Daniel asked.
Vanessa looked at me.
Not him.
Me.
And somehow that hurt the most.
Because even now, she wasn’t thinking about what she did.
She was thinking about how I found out.
“Emily, you’re really going to let this happen?””
I stared at her.
“I’m not doing anything.””
“Yes, you are.””
Her voice cracked.
“You’re standing there while he judges me.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I’m judging your actions.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“That’s easy for you to say.””
“What does that mean?””
She looked away.
“Nothing.””
“No. Say it.””
She didn’t.
The wedding coordinator appeared in the lobby twenty minutes later.
Her name was Claire.
She looked uncomfortable walking toward us.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
Vanessa immediately walked over.
“Claire, this is a misunderstanding.””
Claire looked nervous.
“I don’t think it is.””
That sentence made Vanessa stop.
Claire opened a folder.
“Yesterday, Vanessa asked me to make an announcement during the ceremony.””
Daniel frowned.
“What announcement?””
Claire looked at me.
“I was told to say that Emily would be giving a speech because she wanted to explain why she caused tension between the family.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Claire nodded.
“She said you had been difficult since the surgery.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Vanessa…”
“I didn’t mean it like that,” Vanessa said quickly.
Claire continued.
“She also asked me to mention that the family had been under stress because of your behavior.””
I couldn’t speak.
The humiliation was planned.
Not just privately.
Publicly.
In front of everyone.
At her wedding.
Vanessa had wanted hundreds of people to watch me defend myself.
To watch me look unstable.
To watch her become the wounded bride.
“I never approved that,” Claire said quietly.
“I was uncomfortable, so I contacted Daniel.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You went behind my back?””
Claire blinked.
“I refused to participate in hurting someone.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it was something I wished I had said years earlier.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Why what?””
“Why do you hate your sister?””
The question hit harder than anything else.
Because nobody had ever asked her that.
Not seriously.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“I don’t hate her.””
“Then why?””
She looked at me.
And for a moment, I thought she might finally tell the truth.
Instead, she whispered:
“Because she always gets everything.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
Vanessa laughed.
A broken, angry laugh.
“Everyone always protected Emily.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You’re talking about someone who almost drowned.””
“You don’t understand!””
Her voice echoed through the lobby.
“She was always the one people worried about.””
I felt something inside me crack.
Because suddenly I understood.
This was never about what I did.
It was about what Vanessa believed I represented.
A reminder that she wasn’t always the center.
I thought about childhood.
When I broke my arm at twelve and my parents spent weeks helping me.
When I got sick before a school performance.
When teachers noticed I was struggling.
Every moment Vanessa had secretly counted as proof that the world loved me more.
But she never saw the nights I cried alone.
She never saw how much I hated needing help.
Daniel looked at her with sadness.
“You know what’s unbelievable?””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“What?””
“You convinced yourself you were the victim while hurting everyone around you.””
For once, Vanessa had no response.
The next morning, the wedding ceremony was supposed to begin at noon.
But at 8:17 a.m., Daniel received another message.
This time, it wasn’t from Claire.
It was from an unknown number.
He opened it.
His face immediately changed.
“Emily…”
I stepped closer.
“What?””
He handed me the phone.
There was a photo attached.
A photo from years ago.
A photo I had never seen before.
I looked at the image.
Then at Vanessa.
Because standing beside her in the picture was someone I never expected.
May you like
And beneath the photo was one sentence:
*Ask your sister why she lied about what happened that night.*
