Chapter 12: The Woman Who Held the Missing Piece

I couldn’t sleep.

Not that night.

Not the next one.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the same sentence.

*Emily is not my only daughter.*

My entire identity felt like a house someone had quietly moved the foundation underneath.

I had spent my life trying to understand one sister.

Now I was discovering there were more pieces missing than I ever knew.

By morning, I had made a decision.

I needed to meet Rachel Morgan.

The second daughter.

The woman my father had hidden.

The woman Vanessa had secretly helped.

Daniel drove with me.

Vanessa came too.

At first, I didn’t want her there.

But she looked at me and said something I never expected.

“I owe you the truth.””

So I let her come.

The address led us to a small apartment outside the city.

Nothing about it looked mysterious.

No dramatic secrets.

Just a normal building.

A normal door.

A normal person waiting behind it.

Vanessa knocked.

A woman opened the door.

She looked about my age.

Maybe a little older.

And the first thing I noticed was her eyes.

They looked like my father’s.

She looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

And immediately understood.

“You told her.””

Vanessa nodded.

Rachel Morgan sighed.

“I wondered when you would.””

I stared.

“You knew about me?””

She nodded.

“Of course.””

That hurt.

“How?””

She looked away.

“Your father talked about you.””

I swallowed.

“He knew about me?””

“Yes.””

The pain in her voice surprised me.

“He loved you.””

I almost laughed.

“He never told me you existed.””

“No.””

She looked down.

“He was ashamed.””

We entered her apartment.

On the wall were photographs.

A life.

Her life.

One I never knew existed.

Rachel made tea.

The normality of it felt strange.

Like we weren’t discussing a family secret that had destroyed years of relationships.

Finally, she sat across from me.

“I know you have questions.””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“Ask.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Then back at Rachel.

“Why did you come looking for her?””

Rachel answered immediately.

“Because I found out Vanessa knew.””

“You found out?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

She hesitated.

“My mother told me before she died.””

The room went quiet.

“Your mother knew my father?””

Rachel nodded.

“She knew him before your mother did.””

I felt overwhelmed.

“How many secrets did he have?””

Rachel gave a sad smile.

“Too many.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“What was Vanessa paying for?””

Rachel looked at her.

“Because she felt responsible.””

Vanessa looked down.

Rachel continued.

“When she found out about me, she blamed herself for how angry she became toward Emily.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You paid her because of me?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I wanted to fix something.””

I shook my head.

“You can’t fix years of hurting me with money.””

“I know.””

And again, she didn’t argue.

Rachel reached for a folder.

“There’s something else.””

I felt exhausted hearing those words.

But I listened.

She opened it.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

Birth records.

Letters.

And one photograph.

A photograph of my father holding a baby.

Rachel pointed.

“That’s me.””

Then she moved her finger to another line.

“There’s another name.””

I looked closer.

A third name.

Another child.

Another daughter.

I whispered:

“No.””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“Your father had another child.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I looked at the paperwork.

My family tree was becoming a list of secrets.

“Who is she?””

Rachel looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

“What?””

“She disappeared years ago.””

Daniel frowned.

“Disappeared?””

Rachel nodded.

“After your father died, someone made sure nobody could find her.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Rachel looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“I think you already know.””

I turned.

Vanessa looked terrified.

“No.””

Rachel’s voice was quiet.

“Your mother.””

My entire body went cold.

“Why would my mother hide another sister?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Because she wasn’t hiding her.””

She looked at me.

“She was hiding what happened to her.””

A message suddenly appeared on Rachel’s phone.

She read it.

Then went completely pale.

“What?””

She handed it to me.

The message was from an unknown number.

Only one sentence.

*Stop digging, Emily. You already lost one family member because of the truth. Don’t lose another.*
