Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Smile
I called Daniel immediately.
He answered on the first ring.
“What else did you find?””
His silence told me everything.
“Daniel?””
“I’m at the lobby.””
I grabbed my jacket.
My shoulder screamed as I moved too quickly, but I barely noticed.
When I reached the lobby, Daniel was sitting alone near the windows overlooking the ocean.
The wedding decorations reflected in the glass.
Beautiful.
Fake.
Just like everything else.
He stood when he saw me.
“I’m sorry.””
Those were the first words he said.
I frowned.
“Why are you apologizing?””
“Because I should have listened sooner.””
I sat across from him.
“What did you find?””
Daniel slid his laptop toward me.
“This.””
A folder was open.
Inside were screenshots.
Photos.
Messages.
I clicked the first image.
It was a conversation between Vanessa and her mother.
*Mom:* Are you sure Emily should be included in everything?
*Vanessa:* She always makes people feel sorry for her.
My heart sank.
The next message was worse.
*Vanessa:* After tomorrow, everyone will finally understand what I’ve dealt with.
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel rubbed his face.
“I don’t know.””
I kept scrolling.
Then I saw a message from three months earlier.
The day of my surgery.
Vanessa had written:
*She loves making everyone worried about her. This surgery is going to become her entire personality.*
I stopped breathing for a moment.
Three months ago, I had been terrified.
I remember lying in that hospital bed, unable to move my arm without pain.
Vanessa had held my hand.
She had said, “I’m here for you.””
I believed her.
Daniel watched me carefully.
“Emily, did she act supportive after your surgery?””
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because suddenly it all made sense.
“She wanted everyone to think she was.””
I told him about the calls she made.
The social media posts.
The way she told people she was “taking care of her sister.””
But behind closed doors?
She complained.
She got irritated when I needed help.
She acted like my recovery was an inconvenience.
Daniel leaned back.
“She built herself as the hero.””
“And made me the problem.””
He nodded.
Before we could say anything else, a shadow appeared beside the table.
Vanessa.
She looked at Daniel’s laptop.
Then at me.
Her face changed.
“What are you doing?””
Nobody answered.
Her eyes narrowed.
“Daniel.””
His voice was calm.
“We need to talk.””
She laughed.
“No. We need to stop this.””
She pointed at me.
“Emily has always been good at this.””
My stomach dropped.
“Good at what?””
“Making people choose her.””
The words hurt because they were exactly what she wanted them to do.
She wanted me to defend myself.
She wanted me emotional.
She wanted everyone to see the version of me she created.
But I was tired.
For years, I had been explaining myself to someone who already decided I was guilty.
So I simply asked:
“Why did you push me?””
Vanessa went quiet.
Daniel looked at her.
“Answer.””
She crossed her arms.
“I told you. It was a joke.””
“No,” I said.
My voice surprised even me.
“You wanted people to laugh.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“You’re unbelievable.””
“You wanted me embarrassed.””
“That’s ridiculous.””
“You wanted everyone to think I was weak.””
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Daniel saw it too.
“You did.””
Vanessa looked away.
Then she whispered:
“You have no idea what it’s like living next to someone who always needs saving.””
The words hung there.
Finally.
The truth.
Not an apology.
Not regret.
Just resentment.
I stared at her.
“I needed surgery, Vanessa. I didn’t ask you to hate me for it.””
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Vanessa’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face turned pale.
“Who is it?”” Daniel asked.
She didn’t answer.
The phone kept ringing.
Finally, she picked up.
“Hello?””
Her expression changed.
“What do you mean they found it?””
Daniel and I exchanged confused looks.
Vanessa turned away.
“No. That’s impossible.””
A pause.
Then she whispered:
“You can’t tell him.””
My heart started racing.
Because whoever was on the phone wasn’t talking about the pool.
It wasn’t about the wedding.
It was about something much older.
Something Vanessa had hidden.
May you like
And when she hung up, Daniel looked at her and asked the question that made her completely freeze.
“Vanessa… who were you talking about?””
