Chapter 14: The Truth That Finally Set Me Free

I stepped away from everyone before answering.

Not because I wanted privacy.

Because I needed a moment to understand how my entire family had become a puzzle where everyone held one missing piece.

“Aunt Laura?””

My voice shook.

“Yes.””

She sounded older.

Tired.

Like someone who had spent years waiting for this call.

“How did you get my number?””

“Your mother gave it to me.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course she did.

Everyone was connected.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone except me.

“Where is Lily?””

Silence.

Then my aunt whispered:

“She’s safe.””

I almost cried.

After everything.

After all the secrets.

Those two words mattered.

“She’s alive?””

“Yes.””

I sat down.

“Why did nobody tell me?””

Laura sighed.

“Because your family thought the truth would destroy you.””

I laughed quietly.

“The truth was the only thing that could have saved me.””

Nobody spoke.

Because I was right.

“Where is she?””

“I can’t tell you over the phone.””

“Why?””

“Because someone else has been looking for her.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Another pause.

“Your mother.””

The words hurt.

Even though I expected them.

“Why?””

Laura’s voice became softer.

“Because she knows Lily has the final evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

“The reason your father was afraid.””

I looked toward Daniel.

He immediately understood.

“What happened to him?””

Laura answered:

“He didn’t die naturally.””

The world went silent.

My father’s death.

The one thing I thought I understood.

The one thing nobody questioned.

“What?””

“He was sick, but that wasn’t the whole story.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Who hurt him?””

Laura whispered:

“That’s why you need to meet Lily.””

The call ended.

I stood there frozen.

Daniel approached carefully.

“What happened?””

I looked at him.

“My father was murdered.””

Vanessa heard.

Her face turned white.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

She shook her head quickly.

“No.””

For the first time, I believed her.

Because this wasn’t fear of being caught.

This was genuine shock.

Rachel packed the documents.

“We need to find Lily.””

Nobody argued.

Not even Vanessa.

The next day, Aunt Laura met us at a quiet park outside the city.

She looked exactly how I remembered.

Older.

But familiar.

When she saw me, tears filled her eyes.

“You look like him.””

I almost flinched.

Everyone said that.

But from her, it felt different.

Not like a comparison.

Like a memory.

“Where is Lily?””

Laura looked around.

“She’ll meet us here.””

Minutes passed.

Then a woman walked toward us.

She stopped when she saw me.

And I knew.

Before anyone spoke.

Because she had my father’s eyes.

“My name is Lily.””

I couldn’t move.

She smiled sadly.

“I know this is a lot.””

I laughed through tears.

“That’s one way to say it.””

She looked at Vanessa.

“You’re the sister who hated Emily.””

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.””

Lily surprised everyone by smiling slightly.

“I understand.””

I frowned.

“You do?””

She nodded.

“Because I hated her too.””

The words shocked me.

“Why?””

“Because your father loved you.””

I stared.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Lily looked at me.

“But nobody tells you why.””

She sat down.

“Your father found out something.””

“What?””

“He found out your mother had been moving money from his accounts.””

Daniel frowned.

“She stole from him?””

Lily nodded.

“But that wasn’t the worst part.””

She looked at me.

“She used the money to pay someone.””

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

Lily’s expression changed.

“The person who caused your father’s death.””

The wind moved through the trees.

Nobody spoke.

“Who was it?””

Lily looked directly at Vanessa.

And whispered:

“Your father’s oldest enemy.””

Vanessa frowned.

“I don’t know who that is.””

Lily looked at me.

“Yes, you do.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

May you like

Lily answered:

“The person your mother spent years protecting.””
