Chapter 13: The Daughter They Tried to Erase
The message stayed on Rachel’s phone for nearly a minute.
Nobody touched it.
Nobody spoke.
Because we all understood the same thing.
This wasn’t a warning from the past.
This was someone watching us now.
Daniel was the first to move.
“Who has access to this?””
Rachel shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“Think.””
She looked frustrated.
“I haven’t told anyone.””
Vanessa suddenly stood.
“I have.””
Everyone turned toward her.
My stomach dropped.
“What do you mean?””
She looked ashamed.
“I told someone years ago.””
“Who?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“My mother.””
The room went quiet.
Rachel slowly leaned back.
“She knew?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She knew about Rachel. She knew about everything.””
I stared at my sister.
“Then why did she hide it from me?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because she thought she was protecting you.””
I felt anger rise.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice cracked.
“Everyone keeps saying they protected me while making decisions that destroyed me.””
Nobody argued.
Because it was true.
Rachel picked up the documents again.
“There’s something I never told Vanessa.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“What?””
Rachel pulled out another paper.
“I found the third daughter.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Rachel nodded.
“Her name is Lily.””
The name felt strange.
Like saying it made her more real.
“Where is she?””
Rachel looked at me.
“That’s the problem.””
She slid the paper across the table.
A missing person report.
The date was eight years ago.
The same year as my accident.
My hands went cold.
“She disappeared after your father died.””
Daniel looked at the report.
“Was it investigated?””
Rachel shook her head.
“Barely.””
“Why?””
Rachel looked at Vanessa.
“Because someone told the police she left willingly.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“No.””
Rachel’s voice softened.
“Vanessa.””
“No.””
She stepped back.
“I didn’t know.””
Rachel nodded.
“I believe you.””
I looked between them.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Vanessa covered her face.
“My mother.””
The words barely left her mouth.
“She did it.””
I felt like the floor moved beneath me.
“Did what?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“She helped Lily disappear.””
The room became silent.
I couldn’t understand.
My mother.
The woman who held my hand when I was sick.
The woman who cried when I was hurt.
The woman who said she regretted protecting Vanessa.
Could she really have done this?
“Why?””
Rachel answered.
“Because Lily knew something.””
“What?””
Rachel looked at the documents.
“She knew about your father’s money.””
Daniel frowned.
“What money?””
Rachel sighed.
“Your father had created a trust.””
My eyes narrowed.
“For who?””
“For all his daughters.””
The answer hurt.
Because suddenly I understood.
This wasn’t just about secrets.
It was about inheritance.
About control.
About people making choices because they believed they were entitled to decide who deserved the truth.
“My mother hid her because of money?””
Rachel shook her head.
“Not only money.””
She looked at me.
“Because Lily knew your father was planning to expose everything.””
I whispered:
“Expose what?””
Rachel reached into the folder.
She pulled out a letter.
Another letter from my father.
This one was addressed differently.
*To my daughters, if you ever find this.*
My hands trembled as I opened it.
*I have spent years allowing my mistakes to hurt innocent people. I thought hiding the truth would protect my family. Instead, it destroyed it.*
I continued reading.
*Vanessa, you are not responsible for my failures. Emily, you are not responsible for my failures. Rachel, you are not responsible for my failures.*
A tear fell onto the paper.
Then I read the final part.
*There is one person who knows where Lily is. She has always known.*
I looked up.
“Who?””
Rachel’s eyes moved toward Vanessa.
Then toward me.
“She’s been in your life the entire time.””
My heart raced.
“No.””
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Who?””
Rachel whispered:
“Your mother’s sister.””
My aunt.
I remembered her.
The woman who disappeared from family gatherings years ago.
The woman everyone said was difficult.
The woman nobody talked about.
My phone rang.
I looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
Everyone stared.
I answered.
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Emily?””
My entire body froze.
Because I recognized it.
I hadn’t heard it in years.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“It’s Aunt Laura.””
