Chapter 11: The Sister I Never Knew
The message stayed on Daniel’s phone.
Nobody spoke.
Because sometimes a single sentence can destroy whatever peace you have left.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Paying her?””
Her face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You know who this is.””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Vanessa.””
She closed her eyes.
“I need time.””
I laughed quietly.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“No?””
“No more time.””
My voice shook.
“I spent my whole life waiting for answers.””
Vanessa looked broken.
But I had seen that expression before.
I had mistaken it for guilt.
Now I knew better.
“Who is she?””
Vanessa sat down.
“My half-sister.””
The words sounded strange.
A stranger who was connected to me by blood.
“What’s her name?””
“Rachel.””
I froze.
Not Rachel from the coffee shop.
Another Rachel.
Vanessa noticed my reaction.
“You thought it was your Rachel?””
I nodded.
She looked down.
“Her name is Rachel too.””
Daniel frowned.
“How many people knew about this?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That was terrifying.
“Vanessa.””
She finally spoke.
“Her name is Rachel Morgan.””
My phone was already in my hand before I realized it.
I searched the name.
Nothing useful.
No social media.
No obvious connection.
A person who existed but seemed determined to stay hidden.
“Why have you been paying her?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because she needed help.””
I stared.
“You’re saying you secretly supported your father’s daughter?””
“Yes.””
“Then why hide it?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I hated what it meant.””
I waited.
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“When I found out about her, I felt like my entire life was fake.””
Daniel sat beside her.
“What does Emily have to do with that?””
Vanessa’s face twisted.
“She didn’t do anything.””
That answer shocked me.
Because it was the first time Vanessa had said something that sounded like truth.
“I knew that,” she whispered.
“Then why?””
She looked at me.
“Because you reminded me of him.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“My father?””
She nodded.
“You had his smile.””
I didn’t know what to say.
It was such a small thing.
Such a meaningless thing.
But somehow, to Vanessa, it represented everything she hated.
I sat down.
“So all these years…”
She wiped her eyes.
“I was angry at him.””
“But you hurt me.””
“I know.””
This time, she didn’t defend herself.
That was almost harder.
Because anger was easier to fight.
Regret was harder.
Daniel looked at her.
“Where is Rachel now?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she said:
“California.””
“Why?””
“Because she came to find me.””
“When?””
“Six months ago.””
I frowned.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because she came with a letter.””
“What letter?””
She stood and walked to her suitcase.
She opened a side pocket.
Inside was a folded piece of paper.
She handed it to me.
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
My father’s.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
*Vanessa,*
*If you are reading this, then you know about Rachel.*
I swallowed.
*I need you to understand something. Emily is not the reason I failed you. She is not the reason I made mistakes.*
I continued.
*I hope you don’t spend your life punishing someone innocent for my choices.*
I stopped reading.
Because that was exactly what Vanessa had done.
She had spent years punishing me for someone else’s sins.
At the bottom of the page was one final sentence.
*There is one thing I never told either of my daughters.*
My heart raced.
“What?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I never read the rest.””
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid.””
I unfolded the page.
The rest was hidden by a folded section.
Daniel looked at me.
“Open it.””
I did.
The final lines were written underneath.
*Rachel was not the only child I had before your mother.*
I stopped.
My blood ran cold.
There was another sentence.
*There was another secret I took to my grave.*
I looked up.
“Vanessa.””
She was crying.
“I didn’t know.””
Daniel stared at the letter.
“Your father had another secret?””
I looked back down.
The final words were faded.
May you like
But readable.
*Emily is not my only daughter.*
