Chapter 9: The Last Secret
My father sat across from the detective six hours later.
I watched from another room through the observation window.
For years, I had thought my father was the strong one.
The protector.
The person who would always stand between me and danger.
But now he looked small.
Broken.
The detective placed evidence on the table.
A shredded document.
A damaged phone.
And a set of keys.
My father stared at them.
“You don’t understand.””
The detective leaned forward.
“Then explain.””
My father rubbed his face.
“I was trying to protect my daughter.””
The detective looked confused.
“Which daughter?””
My father didn’t answer.
That silence said enough.
I walked into the room.
My father looked up.
His face changed.
“Emma.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I thought I could control it.””
I shook my head.
“You watched my sister attack me.””
“I know.””
“You lied for Mom.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe I was safe.””
His voice cracked.
“I was wrong.””
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I asked the only question that mattered.
“How long did you know?””
My father looked down.
“Since before the attack.””
The room went silent.
Ethan stepped forward.
“You knew she was planning something?””
My father nodded.
“But I didn’t know she would hurt Emma.””
I looked at him.
“That doesn’t make it better.””
He closed his eyes.
“I know.””
The detective placed the phone on the table.
“We recovered deleted messages.””
My father looked terrified.
“From who?””
The detective answered.
“Your wife.””
He played the first message.
My mother’s voice appeared through the recording.
“Once the baby is gone, everything returns to normal.””
My entire body froze.
Ethan reached for my hand.
Another message played.
My mother again.
“Claire only needs to create the accident.””
My eyes filled with tears.
She had used my sister.
She had manipulated everyone.
The detective stopped the recording.
“There’s more.””
He opened another file.
“This message was sent after the hospital incident.””
The message appeared.
*“If Emma survives, we need another plan.””*
I felt cold.
Even after everything.
Even after my baby survived.
She was still thinking about another plan.
The detective looked at me.
“We believe your mother intended to take control of the trust through legal guardianship claims if something happened to you.””
I stared.
“She wanted my baby.””
“Yes.””
The words hurt.
But they finally explained everything.
My baby wasn’t just about money.
She was the final piece of control my mother wanted.
The next morning, my daughter’s heartbeat monitor showed something different.
The doctor smiled.
“She’s stronger.””
I cried.
Not from fear.
From relief.
Ethan kissed my forehead.
“She’s fighting.””
I placed my hand on my stomach.
“So am I.””
But before I could relax, the doctor’s expression changed.
“There is one more thing.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
The doctor looked at the file.
“During the additional tests, we found something concerning.””
I sat up.
“About my baby?””
The doctor shook her head.
“Not exactly.””
She looked at Ethan.
Then me.
“We found evidence that someone attempted to interfere with your pregnancy long before the attack.””
I felt the room spin.
“Before?””
The doctor nodded.
“And we found where it started.””
I held my breath.
The doctor opened the file.
Inside was a date.
A date from six months earlier.
The day my mother first told me she was excited to become a grandmother.
May you like
The doctor whispered:
“That was the first time someone tried to harm your baby.””
