Chapter 8: The Evidence My Mother Hid
I couldn’t stop staring at the security footage.
My mother walking through the hospital hallway.
Calm.
Focused.
Like she belonged there.
Like she wasn’t the reason I was afraid to sleep.
Ethan stood beside me.
“That’s her.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
The detective paused the video.
“She entered using an old family emergency contact list. Hospital staff believed she was authorized.””
My hands shook.
“She knew exactly how to get here.””
The detective nodded.
“She also knew which floor.””
A terrible thought entered my mind.
“She was looking for my baby.””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody had to.
The detective zoomed in on the footage.
My mother was holding a small bag.
“What was inside?””
“We’re still checking.””
A security officer entered the room.
“We found the bag.””
Everyone turned.
The officer placed it on the table.
Inside were several items.
A notebook.
A bottle.
And a folder.
My breathing changed.
The detective opened the folder first.
Inside were copies of my prenatal records.
My appointments.
My doctor’s notes.
My daughter’s estimated due date.
Someone had been tracking my pregnancy.
The officer opened the notebook.
“Look at this.””
The detective read the first page.
Then his face hardened.
“What?””
He handed it to Ethan.
Ethan read silently.
Then passed it to me.
The notebook contained dates.
Appointments.
Notes.
Every detail.
But one line made my blood run cold.
*“After delivery, the trust transfers immediately.””*
Underneath:
*“No mistakes this time.””*
I felt sick.
The detective looked at me.
“This appears to show planning.””
I whispered:
“She was counting down.””
The door suddenly opened.
A nurse rushed in.
“Emma, we need to move you.””
Ethan immediately stood.
“Why?””
“There’s been a security concern.””
The detective looked toward the hallway.
“What kind?””
The nurse hesitated.
“Someone called the hospital claiming to be Emma’s legal representative.””
My stomach dropped.
“I don’t have a legal representative.””
The detective looked at me.
“Did your mother ever arrange one?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
A few minutes later, security brought the caller’s information.
The detective looked at the name.
Then froze.
“What?””
He turned the screen.
The caller was registered under a law firm.
A law firm connected to my father.
Ethan stared.
“Your father too?””
I felt something inside me break.
My father.
The man who stood in that backyard.
The man who watched me fall.
He wasn’t just covering for my sister.
He was involved.
The detective immediately ordered officers to contact him.
But before they could leave, Richard spoke.
“There’s something you need to know.””
Everyone looked at him.
Richard’s face was pale.
“Your father wasn’t helping your mother.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Richard looked at me.
“He was afraid of her.””
The room went silent.
The detective stepped closer.
“Explain.””
Richard swallowed.
“Your mother has controlled this family for years. She controls the money. The decisions. The secrets.””
I looked away.
Because part of me knew.
Every family gathering.
Every argument.
Every time someone apologized to keep peace.
It was always my mother.
Richard continued.
“Your father didn’t plan the attack.””
The detective narrowed his eyes.
“Then why hide evidence?””
Richard looked down.
“Because he knew what she was capable of.””
I didn’t know what hurt more.
That my father betrayed me.
Or that maybe he had been too afraid to stop it.
Then the detective’s phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
And his expression changed.
“Where?””
Everyone watched him.
He ended the call.
Then looked directly at me.
“Your father has been found.””
My heart sank.
“Is he okay?””
The detective didn’t answer immediately.
“He was taken into custody.””
I exhaled.
“Why?””
May you like
The detective looked at the evidence bag.
“Because he was caught destroying something.””
