Chapter 3: The Name on the Note

I couldn’t breathe.

Not because of the hospital.

Not because of the fear.

Because I recognized the handwriting.

I had seen it thousands of times.

On birthday cards.

On grocery lists.

On letters left beside my breakfast plate when I was a child.

My mother’s handwriting.

Ethan looked at me carefully.

“Emma?””

I couldn’t answer.

The officer leaned forward.

“Are you certain?””

I nodded slowly.

“That’s my mother’s writing.””

The room felt smaller.

The person who had held my hand through my pregnancy.

The person who cried when she heard I was having a girl.

The person who told me she couldn’t wait to be a grandmother.

She was the one who wrote those words.

The officer closed his notebook.

“We need to understand the connection between this note and the attack.””

I stared at the photograph.

“It started with the trust.””

Ethan looked confused.

“Tell me everything.””

I swallowed.

“My grandmother left money and property for her first grandchild. But after my father’s business failed, my parents began asking for access.””

The officer listened.

“The trust had one condition. It couldn’t be changed until my baby was born.””

“And your sister knew this?”” he asked.

I nodded.

“Everyone knew.””

Ethan stood and walked toward the window.

“So Claire attacked you because she wanted the inheritance delayed.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

The realization hit me harder.

“Claire wasn’t smart enough to plan something like this.””

The officer raised an eyebrow.

“Who was?””

I looked down at the note again.

“My mother.””

The next morning, detectives visited my parents’ house.

Ethan stayed with me while I watched through a video call.

My father looked angry.

My mother looked calm.

Too calm.

The detective placed the phone recording on the table.

“Your daughter’s cousin captured the entire incident.””

My father crossed his arms.

“Claire made a mistake.””

The detective didn’t react.

“A mistake involving a pregnant woman falling to the ground?””

My mother finally spoke.

“She was emotional. Families fight.””

I stared at the screen.

That sentence hurt more than anything.

Families fight.

As if what happened was normal.

As if my baby’s safety was just another argument.

Then the detective placed another item on the table.

A small envelope.

My mother’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But everyone noticed.

“What is that?”” my father asked.

The detective opened it.

“Something we found hidden with the inheritance documents.””

He pulled out a printed email.

My heart raced.

Because I saw the sender’s name.

Claire.

The message was dated three weeks before the attack.

The detective began reading.

“Mom, I can’t keep waiting. If Emma’s baby is born, everything goes to her. We need another solution.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Ethan.

He looked back at me.

Then the detective read the final line.

A line that revealed this was bigger than my sister losing control.

May you like

It was a plan.

*“Tell me what to do before the baby arrives.””*
