Chapter 1: The Fall on the Grass
My sister looked me straight in the eyes before she kicked my six-month pregnant belly.
“This is what you get for thinking you’re better than family!””
The world went silent before I hit the grass.
For one terrifying second, I didn’t feel pain.
I only felt fear.
My hands immediately wrapped around my stomach as I curled onto my side, whispering the only thing that mattered.
“Please… please move, sweetheart.””
My baby girl had been active all morning.
She always kicked when I drank cold lemonade. She always moved when my husband, Ethan, placed his hand on my stomach and talked to her.
But now…
Nothing.
Not one flutter.
Not one tiny movement.
I looked up and saw my sister Claire standing above me.
Her face was pale.
But not because she was sorry.
Because our sixteen-year-old cousin Noah was standing near the driveway, holding his phone.
Recording everything.
Claire’s expression changed instantly.
“She came at me!”” Claire shouted.
Everyone froze.
My father stepped forward first.
“Claire, calm down. Nobody saw what happened.””
I stared at him from the grass.
“Nobody saw?””
My voice barely came out.
“You were standing right there.””
My mother rushed toward Claire instead of me.
“Oh my God, look at her. She’s shaking.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
My own mother was checking if my sister was okay while I was lying on the ground, six months pregnant, praying my baby was alive.
Ethan appeared from inside the house seconds later.
The moment he saw me, his entire face changed.
He dropped beside me.
“Emma. Look at me.””
I grabbed his sleeve.
“The baby isn’t moving.””
His jaw tightened.
He pulled out his phone and called emergency services.
Then he slowly stood.
Everyone expected him to yell.
To scream.
To lose control.
He didn’t.
He looked around the backyard at the family members who had watched me fall.
His voice was quiet.
Almost too quiet.
“Nobody moves.””
My father frowned.
“Ethan, don’t make this dramatic. It was an accident.””
Ethan looked at him.
“An accident has a reason. A person has a choice.””
Claire started crying.
“I didn’t mean to hurt her.””
Noah suddenly stepped forward.
“I recorded it.””
The entire backyard went still.
Claire’s tears stopped.
My father turned sharply.
“Noah, give me that phone.””
Noah backed away.
“Why?””
“Because this is a family matter,” my father snapped.
Ethan immediately stepped between them.
“No.””
My father’s face hardened.
“You’re making a mistake.””
Ethan looked at the phone in Noah’s hand.
Then at my father.
“No. I think we’re finally seeing the truth.””
The ambulance arrived minutes later.
As the paramedics lifted me onto the stretcher, I saw my mother walking toward the house.
She thought nobody noticed.
But I did.
She went straight to the study.
The same room where my grandmother’s inheritance documents had been sitting.
The documents everyone had been arguing about all afternoon.
The documents that would officially transfer my grandmother’s trust to my unborn daughter once she was born.

And suddenly, while I was being taken away in an ambulance…
My mother was trying to hide something.
