Chapter 4: The Family Meeting

The next three days felt like living inside a nightmare I couldn’t wake up from.

My daughter was still in the hospital under observation.

Every time the monitor made a sound, my heart jumped.

Every time a nurse entered the room, I held my breath.

But the hardest part wasn’t the fear.

It was knowing the people who were supposed to protect me had been the ones I needed protection from.

Ethan sat beside my bed, reading through the police updates on his laptop.

“They found more messages,” he said quietly.

I looked at him.

“Between my mother and Claire?””

He nodded.

“Months of them talking about the trust.””

I closed my eyes.

Months.

They had been planning while I was decorating the nursery.

While I was choosing baby clothes.

While I was telling my mother how excited I was for her to hold her granddaughter.

“What did they say?””

Ethan hesitated.

That scared me more than anything.

“Ethan.””

He turned the laptop toward me.

The messages were printed on the screen.

Claire: She doesn’t deserve everything. She always acts like she’s better than us.

My mother: She thinks because she married well, she can judge everyone.

Claire: The baby changes everything.

My hands shook.

The words were simple.

But they carried years of resentment.

I remembered every family dinner where Claire complained about my life.

Every time she compared our houses.

Our marriages.

Our choices.

But I never imagined jealousy could turn into this.

A knock interrupted us.

A police detective entered.

“Mrs. Carter, your family requested a meeting.””

I immediately frowned.

“Why?””

“They said they want to explain themselves.””

Ethan stood.

“No.””

The detective looked at him.

“No?””

“No private conversations. No emotional pressure. Everything happens with witnesses.””

The detective nodded.

“That’s why I’m here.””

An hour later, my parents and Claire entered the hospital conference room.

I almost didn’t recognize them.

Claire looked smaller than before.

Not guilty.

Afraid.

My father walked in like he was still in control.

My mother avoided looking at me.

The detective sat at the end of the table.

“This meeting is being recorded.””

My father immediately looked annoyed.

“Is that necessary?””

“Yes,” the detective replied.

The silence that followed was heavy.

Claire looked at me.

“Emma…”

I stared at her.

The same person who had smiled at my baby shower.

The same person who had placed her hand on my stomach and said, “I can’t wait to meet her.””

Now I couldn’t even understand who I was looking at.

“You kicked me,” I said.

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I lost control.””

“You kicked my unborn child.””

“I didn’t know it would hurt her.””

Ethan’s voice was cold.

“You didn’t know kicking a pregnant woman could hurt her?””

Claire looked down.

My father suddenly interrupted.

“This has gone too far.””

Everyone turned toward him.

He leaned forward.

“Claire made a mistake. Your mother made mistakes. But we are still family.””

I stared at him.

“Family doesn’t write notes saying my baby cannot be born.””

My mother finally looked up.

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You don’t understand.””

I felt a chill.

“Understand what?””

She pressed her lips together.

“You have no idea what that money would have done for this family.””

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“So that’s it?””

Nobody answered.

“You wanted my daughter gone because of money?””

My mother looked away.

The detective opened a folder.

“We also found another issue.””

My father’s face tightened.

“What issue?””

The detective removed several bank records.

“Large withdrawals from family accounts.””

My mother immediately became defensive.

“That has nothing to do with this.””

“It does,” the detective said.

“Because the money was transferred to someone connected to the trust.””

The room became silent.

I looked at the papers.

Then at my family.

“Who?””

The detective slowly turned one page.

“The recipient’s name is…”

He stopped.

May you like

Then looked directly at me.

And I knew from his expression that whatever came next would change everything.
