Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Plan

The detective placed the document on the table.

“The recipient was your uncle, Richard Carter.””

My heart sank.

My uncle.

My grandmother’s oldest son.

The person everyone said had disappeared years ago after a family argument.

Ethan looked at me.

“Did you know he was involved?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My father suddenly stood.

“That’s impossible.””

The detective looked at him.

“Sit down, Mr. Carter.””

My father slowly lowered himself back into the chair.

For the first time, he looked nervous.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Nervous.

The detective continued.

“Richard Carter contacted your mother six months ago. The same month your grandmother updated the trust.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

Six months.

The same time I told my family I was pregnant.

The same time everyone suddenly became interested in my health.

My mother whispered.

“He promised he could fix everything.””

I stared at her.

“Fix what?””

She didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I thought…”

She stopped.

The detective leaned forward.

“You thought what?””

My mother covered her face.

“I thought Emma would have another child someday.””

The room went silent.

I felt like I had been slapped.

Another child someday.

Like my daughter was replaceable.

Like she was just an obstacle.

Ethan moved closer to me.

The detective looked at Claire.

“Your sister was told what?””

Claire began crying.

“He said it wouldn’t hurt her.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

Claire wiped her face.

“Uncle Richard said the baby would be fine. He said Mom would create a situation where the trust would be delayed.””

My voice shook.

“So you knew?””

Claire looked at me.

“I didn’t know he wanted…”

She stopped.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“I didn’t know there was a second part.””

The detective opened another file.

“We found evidence that someone searched for medical information related to pregnancy complications.””

My blood turned cold.

“Who?””

The detective looked at the report.

“Richard Carter.””

Nobody spoke.

The room felt frozen.

My mother started crying.

“I didn’t know it would become this.””

I looked at her.

“You didn’t know?””

My voice cracked.

“You gave me those supplements.””

She looked down.

The silence was the answer.

Ethan’s hand tightened around mine.

The detective stood.

“We are still investigating the full extent of the plan.””

My father suddenly spoke.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

He looked broken.

“If Richard did this… then Claire didn’t know everything.””

The detective nodded.

“That appears to be the case.””

I stared at my father.

It was strange.

Even now, even after everything, part of me wanted him to choose me.

To say he was sorry.

To say he should have protected me.

Instead, he whispered:

“I never thought it would go this far.””

I looked at him.

“But you watched.””

His eyes dropped.

Because he knew.

That was the truth.

He watched.

He defended.

He stayed silent.

And silence had consequences.

That night, I returned to my hospital room.

My daughter’s heartbeat filled the room.

Strong.

Steady.

Beautiful.

I placed my hand on my stomach.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart.””

A tear fell down my face.

“I should have protected you sooner.””

Ethan sat beside me.

“You did.””

I looked at him.

“How?””

He smiled sadly.

“Because you survived.””

A nurse suddenly rushed into the room.

Her face was pale.

“Mrs. Carter?””

I sat up.

“What happened?””

She looked at Ethan.

Then back at me.

“We received a call from the security desk.””

My heart started racing.

“About what?””

The nurse swallowed.

“Someone tried to enter the maternity ward using your mother’s name.””

I froze.

“My mother?””

The nurse nodded.

“And they were carrying something.””

Ethan stood immediately.

“What?””

May you like

The nurse looked toward the hallway.

“A sealed envelope.””
