Chapter 13: The Woman My Grandmother Trusted

I held the phone so tightly my fingers hurt.

“The person who started this plan is still free?””

The woman on the other end didn’t answer immediately.

I could hear her breathing.

Like she was afraid someone was listening.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Sarah Whitman.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But then she continued.

“Your grandmother hired me twelve years ago.””

I froze.

“My grandmother?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Ethan.

He immediately noticed my expression.

“What happened?””

I put the phone on speaker.

Sarah continued.

“Your grandmother knew your family had problems with money. She knew resentment was growing.””

I swallowed.

“She knew?””

“She saw things before everyone else did.””

I sat down slowly.

“What did she hire you for?””

“To protect the trust.””

Ethan leaned closer.

“From who?””

There was a pause.

Then Sarah answered.

“From anyone who tried to manipulate it.””

My heart sank.

“So my grandmother expected this?””

“Not exactly.””

Sarah’s voice softened.

“But she knew someone would eventually try.””

I looked at the ultrasound picture on the table.

My daughter.

The person everyone had fought over before she even arrived.

Sarah continued.

“Your grandmother created a second layer of protection.””

“What kind?””

“A hidden review.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means if anyone connected to the family attempted to interfere with the birth, health, or safety of the child, the trust would be frozen and investigated.””

I looked at Ethan.

“That’s why my mother couldn’t get the money.””

“Yes.””

Sarah continued.

“But there was one problem.””

“What?””

“The investigation was never activated.””

I felt confused.

“Why not?””

“Because someone inside the system blocked the alerts.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Sarah took a deep breath.

“Victor Hale.””

Everything suddenly made sense.

The lawyer.

The fake documents.

The hospital request.

The connections.

“He was supposed to protect the trust.””

“Yes.””

“And he betrayed my grandmother?””

“Yes.””

Silence filled the room.

My grandmother had trusted someone.

And that person had helped destroy our family.

Sarah continued.

“Your grandmother suspected him years ago.””

“Then why didn’t she remove him?””

“Because she needed proof.””

I shook my head.

“So he waited.””

“Yes.””

“He waited until she was gone.””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

A person could spend years building a trap.

Waiting for the right moment.

The detective arrived an hour later.

When Ethan explained everything, his expression changed.

“Sarah Whitman.””

“You know her?””

He nodded.

“She was your grandmother’s estate investigator.””

The detective immediately made a call.

Within minutes, they confirmed Sarah’s identity.

Then they found something else.

Victor Hale had already left the city.

“He knew,” the detective said.

Ethan looked angry.

“He knew the investigation was coming.””

The detective nodded.

“He accessed restricted files this morning.””

My heart dropped.

“What files?””

The detective looked at me.

“Your daughter’s trust documents.””

I stood.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

But we all knew.

Victor wasn’t running because he was guilty.

He was running because he was not finished.

That evening, Sarah sent one final piece of evidence.

A recording from my grandmother.

A message she had recorded years before.

I pressed play.

My grandmother’s voice filled the room.

“My dear Emma.””

I immediately started crying.

I hadn’t heard her voice since she passed.

“If you are hearing this, something happened that I hoped would never happen.””

I covered my mouth.

My grandmother continued.

“Remember this. Money reveals people. It does not change them.””

A pause.

“The people who truly love you will protect what cannot protect itself.””

My eyes moved to my daughter.

The recording continued.

“And if anyone tries to hurt my great-grandchild…”

Her voice became firm.

“They will learn that kindness does not mean weakness.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then the detective’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?””

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“Victor Hale just contacted the police.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

The detective’s expression was serious.

“He wants to make a deal.””

Ethan stood.

“A deal for what?””

May you like

The detective looked at the evidence folder.

“He says he knows who actually ordered the attack.””
