Chapter 8: The Truth About Diane

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I was angry.

Anger would have been easier.

I stayed awake because my mind kept replaying every moment I ignored.

Every time Diane criticized my choices.

Every time she made comments about money.

Every time she asked questions about my house.

I had thought she was being difficult.

I never imagined she was calculating.

The next morning, I walked into my attorney’s office with my mother beside me.

My lawyer, Rebecca, looked serious.

She placed several folders on the table.

“Sarah, I need you to stay calm while I explain this.””

I almost smiled.

“Everyone keeps telling me that.””

Rebecca opened the first folder.

“The company receiving the transfers is called Evergreen Holdings.””

I nodded.

“I’ve never heard of it.””

“You weren’t supposed to.””

She slid another document forward.

“The registered owner is Diane Miller.””

My mother covered her mouth.

I stared at the paper.

Diane.

My husband’s mother.

Not his ex-wife.

Not some random business partner.

The woman who sat on my couch eating fruit while my mother washed dishes.

“How much?””

Rebecca looked down.

“Approximately one hundred and eighty thousand dollars.””

My stomach tightened.

“From our accounts?””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

I thought about Noah.

His future.

Our savings.

The money we were supposed to use for his education.

Rebecca continued.

“But there’s more.””

I looked up.

“What?””

She opened another folder.

“Diane did not just receive money.””

My fingers went cold.

“What did she do?””

“She created debt.””

Rebecca pushed a document toward me.

“Your husband signed agreements using your marital assets as collateral.””

I stared at the paper.

“How?””

“Because of the authorization document your mother signed.””

My heart sank.

The one Jason lied about.

The one he used my mother to get.

I leaned back.

“So they planned this.””

Rebecca didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

My mother looked devastated.

“I trusted them.””

I took her hand.

“Mom.””

She shook her head.

“No. I should have known.””

Rebecca closed the folder.

“Sarah, there’s one more thing.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“Your mother wasn’t the only person they tried to use.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What does that mean?””

Rebecca reached into another folder.

She pulled out a document.

“This was filed three weeks ago.””

I read the title.

My breath caught.

A custody agreement.

For Noah.

I looked at Rebecca.

“Why is this here?””

Her voice became softer.

“Because Jason was preparing for the possibility that you would find out.””

I felt like the room disappeared.

“He was planning to take my son?””

Rebecca nodded.

“He was building a case claiming you were unstable and financially irresponsible.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“My husband was going to make me look like the problem?””

My mother squeezed my hand.

“That’s why he wanted control.””

I looked at the documents.

Suddenly everything made sense.

The forged papers.

The hidden money.

The strange questions.

The pressure.

They weren’t just trying to get my house.

They were preparing to take my life apart.

My phone rang.

Jason.

I stared at the screen.

Rebecca looked at me.

“You don’t have to answer.””

But I did.

“Hello?””

His voice was quiet.

“Sarah, we need to talk.””

I looked at the custody papers.

“We do.””

“Please come home.””

I almost laughed.

“Home?””

A pause.

Then Jason said:

“I know what you found.””

My grip tightened.

“Then you know this is over.””

“No.””

His voice changed.

Desperate.

“Sarah, you don’t understand.””

I looked at Rebecca.

Then my mother.

“Explain.””

Silence.

Then Jason whispered:

“Diane isn’t the person you should be afraid of.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

Another pause.

May you like

Then he said:

“Because she didn’t start this.””
