Chapter 10: The Man Who Owned The Secret

The man standing in the doorway didn’t look like someone who had just been exposed.

He looked calm.

Too calm.

He wore an expensive suit, carried a briefcase, and had the confidence of someone who believed every room belonged to him.

Jason’s face had lost all color.

“Robert.””

The man smiled slightly.

“Jason.””

I looked between them.

“Who is he?””

Nobody answered.

That scared me more than anything.

The man stepped inside and closed the door behind him.

“Sarah, I assume.””

I didn’t move.

“You know my name.””

He smiled.

“I know a lot about you.””

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

Jason stepped forward.

“Robert, you need to leave.””

Robert laughed.

“Now you’re worried about boundaries?””

Jason clenched his jaw.

“You’re done.””

“No.””

Robert looked at me.

“He’s only saying that because he thinks you’re going to save him.””

I stared at him.

“Save him from what?””

Robert placed his briefcase on the table.

“From the consequences of his own choices.””

I looked at Jason.

“Explain.””

Jason looked exhausted.

“Robert was my business partner years ago.””

Robert interrupted.

“Partner is a generous word.””

He opened his briefcase.

“He worked for me.””

I frowned.

“What does this have to do with my house?””

Robert smiled.

“Everything.””

He pulled out a folder.

“I funded Jason’s first company. When it failed, he owed me money.””

Jason shook his head.

“That was years ago.””

Robert looked at him.

“And debts don’t disappear because time passes.””

I stepped closer.

“You pressured him?””

Robert shrugged.

“I gave him options.””

“What options?””

His smile disappeared.

“The kind people take when they have something to lose.””

I looked at Jason.

“Your mother knew?””

Jason nodded slowly.

“She helped Robert find ways to pressure me.””

I felt sick.

“So Diane wasn’t just stealing money.””

“No,” Jason whispered.

“She was trying to pay off a debt.””

Robert walked around the room.

“And Sarah’s house was the easiest solution.””

My hands tightened.

“You planned to take my home.””

Robert looked directly at me.

“I planned to recover what I was owed.””

“You used my family.””

He tilted his head.

“Your family used themselves.””

That sentence made Jason step forward.

“Don’t talk to her like that.””

Robert smiled.

“Look at you. Suddenly protective.””

Jason’s face hardened.

“I made mistakes.””

Robert laughed.

“You made choices.””

The room became silent.

I looked at Jason.

For the first time, I saw something different.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Real fear.

I turned toward Robert.

“How were you going to take Noah?””

His expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

He knew exactly what I was talking about.

Jason noticed too.

“You told her?””

Robert sighed.

“You always were terrible at keeping secrets.””

I picked up my phone.

Robert immediately said:

“Calling your lawyer?””

I froze.

“How do you know?””

He smiled.

“Because I know everything happening in this house.””

That sentence sent chills through me.

“How?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Jason.

“You should have deleted the cameras.””

My heart stopped.

“Cameras?””

Jason looked shocked.

“What cameras?””

Robert smiled.

And suddenly I understood.

The house.

The documents.

The conversations.

They weren’t just watching our money.

They were watching us.

I walked slowly toward the hallway.

“Where?””

Robert said nothing.

I looked at Jason.

“Where are the cameras?””

His face changed.

Then he whispered:

“I never installed any.””

I turned back toward Robert.

The man who had been controlling everything from the shadows.

And he smiled.

May you like

Because he knew I had just realized something.

Someone else had access to my home.
