Chapter 13: The Bloodline They Hid From Me

For a moment, I thought I had heard Jason wrong.

The room was silent.

Even Robert stopped moving.

I looked at Jason.

“What did you just say?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Mark is Noah’s biological grandfather.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The word came out automatically.

“No, that’s impossible.””

Jason looked down.

“I should have told you.””

I stepped back.

“You should have told me a lot of things.””

My voice cracked.

“Who is Mark’s child?””

Jason didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation destroyed whatever trust I had left.

“Jason.””

He swallowed.

“My first wife.””

Everything clicked.

The hidden company.

The pressure.

The custody papers.

The obsession with Noah.

My hands went cold.

“Your first wife is Noah’s biological mother’s mother?””

Jason nodded.

“She passed away years ago.””

I stared at him.

“Then why does Mark care about Noah?””

Jason looked toward the floor.

“Because he believes Noah is the only connection left to his daughter.””

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“So instead of coming to us honestly…”

I looked around the room.

“He tried to take my son.””

Jason closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

Robert finally spoke.

“You’re making this emotional.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Rebecca stepped forward.

“This changes everything.””

Robert looked at her.

“Does it?””

“Yes.””

Her voice was firm.

“Because now we have evidence of a coordinated attempt to manipulate custody.””

Robert smiled.

“You still need proof.””

Rebecca opened her laptop.

“Actually, I have some.””

Everyone looked at her.

She turned the screen around.

“Remember the camera?””

I nodded.

She continued.

“The device was connected to a private network.””

Jason frowned.

“Whose network?””

Rebecca looked at him.

“Mark’s.””

Jason looked stunned.

I watched him carefully.

For the first time, I realized Jason wasn’t the person with all the answers.

He was another piece in someone else’s plan.

Rebecca continued.

“I also traced the document creation.””

She clicked another file.

“The custody paperwork was prepared six weeks before Sarah ever knew about the financial issues.””

My stomach tightened.

Six weeks.

They had been planning this long before I came home.

Jason whispered:

“They were always going to do this.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The answer was everywhere.

Diane.

Mark.

Robert.

All the people who smiled at dinner.

All the people who told me I was overreacting.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Nobody moved.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

Mark.

“Sarah.””

My entire body went tense.

“Where are you?””

He ignored the question.

“You need to understand something.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Do I?””

“You think I’m the villain.””

I looked at Jason.

“You broke into my life.””

Mark’s voice hardened.

“I was protecting my family.””

“No.””

I looked at Noah’s picture on my phone.

“You were taking mine.””

Silence.

Then Mark said:

“You don’t know the whole story.””

I gripped the phone.

“Then tell me.””

His voice became quieter.

“Because Jason lied about Noah’s birth.””

The room froze.

I looked at Jason.

“What?””

Jason’s face changed.

“Mark, don’t.””

My heart started pounding.

“What does he mean?””

Mark continued.

“Ask your husband why he never told you the truth about Noah’s biological family.””

I looked at Jason.

“Jason?””

He stepped forward.

“Sarah, listen to me.””

But Mark had already hung up.

I stared at my husband.

“Is there something else?””

May you like

Jason didn’t answer.

And that silence terrified me more than anything.
