Chapter 5: My Mother’s Hidden Fear
I found my mother sitting on the edge of the guest room bed.
Noah was asleep beside her.
She was staring at the floor.
Like she had been carrying a secret too heavy to hold.
“Mom.””
She looked up.
Her eyes immediately filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
I sat beside her.
“For what?””
She shook her head.
“For not telling you sooner.””
I took her hand.
“Tell me everything.””
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“I was scared.””
Those words hurt more than anything.
My mother was never scared.
Not when my father left.
Not when she worked three jobs.
Not when she had surgery alone because she didn’t want to worry me.
“What did they do?””
She looked toward the closed door.
“Jason came to me two months ago.””
I listened carefully.
“He said you were under too much pressure. He said your business was failing and you were hiding financial problems from him.””
I frowned.
“That’s a lie.””
“I know that now.””
She looked down.
“But at the time, I believed him.””
I squeezed her hand.
“What did he ask you to sign?””
“He said it was only permission to discuss the house if there was ever an emergency.””
My heart sank.
“Mom.””
“I know.””
Her voice cracked.
“I should have read every word.””
I hugged her.
“No.””
She pulled away.
“Yes, Sarah. I should have.””
Then she opened the drawer beside the bed.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this.””
I took it.
Inside was a copy of the document she signed.
I read every line.
And then I saw it.
A paragraph hidden near the bottom.
It gave Jason permission to make financial decisions involving property connected to me.
Not ownership.
Not yet.
But enough to create problems.
My hands shook.
“He lied to you.””
Mom nodded.
“I realized something was wrong when Diane started asking questions.””
“What questions?””
She looked embarrassed.
“She asked how much the house was worth.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
“She said she was just curious.””
My jaw tightened.
Nothing about this was curiosity.
It was planning.
I walked downstairs holding the document.
Jason was still in the living room.
Diane and Mark were standing near him.
They looked like they had been waiting.
I placed the paper on the table.
“You manipulated my mother.””
Jason looked exhausted.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to say my name like everything is normal.””
Diane stepped forward.
“Your husband was trying to protect his family.””
I looked at her.
“You mean himself.””
Her expression hardened.
“You’re being selfish.””
That word almost made me laugh.
“Selfish?””
I pointed upstairs.
“My mother is seventy years old next year. She came here to see her grandson, and you turned her into your housekeeper.””
Diane’s face twisted.
“She wanted to contribute.””
My voice dropped.
“She wanted to be loved.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Jason quietly said:
“I made mistakes.””
I looked at him.
“Mistakes are forgetting an anniversary.””
I held up the document.
“This was a decision.””
He looked down.
“I was going to fix it.””
“When?””
He didn’t answer.
“When you owned my house?””
His silence said enough.
I grabbed my coat.
Jason looked confused.
“Where are you going?””
“To protect myself.””
He stepped forward.
“Sarah, don’t leave.””
I looked at him.
“You should have thought about that before you let your mother and brother help you steal from me.””
Mark suddenly spoke.
“You’re making a huge mistake.””
I turned.
“Am I?””
He reached into his briefcase.
And placed a folder on the table.
My heart stopped.
“What is that?””
Nobody answered.
Mark looked directly at Jason.
Then at me.
“It’s the reason Jason was so desperate.””
I opened the folder.
The first page was a bank statement.
The second page was worse.
There were transfers.
Large ones.
Going out of our joint account.
But the name receiving the money wasn’t Jason.
It wasn’t Diane.
It was a company.
A company I had never heard of.
I looked at Jason.
“What is this?””
He looked terrified.
Then my phone rang.
My attorney again.
I answered.
“Sarah, I found another issue.””
I stepped away.
“What issue?””
A pause.
Then his voice lowered.
“The company receiving those transfers…”
I waited.
“It’s registered under a name you know.””
My fingers went numb.
“Whose name?””
May you like
My attorney answered:
“Your husband’s first wife.””
