Chapter 12: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine
I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen.
My signature.
On a document I had never seen.
A contract I never signed.
A promise I never made.
I looked at Jason.
“Did you do this?””
His face immediately changed.
“No.””
The answer came too fast.
But this time, I believed him.
Because he looked as shocked as I was.
Robert leaned back.
“Interesting.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He smiled.
“You’re finally realizing Jason wasn’t the only person lying.””
The room felt cold.
I grabbed the phone from his hand.
He let me.
Because he thought I wouldn’t find anything.
But I did.
The document had a date.
A date when I was out of state for work.
Impossible.
I looked at Jason.
“I wasn’t even here.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
Rebecca arrived twenty minutes later.
The moment she saw the documents, her expression changed.
“This is serious.””
Robert remained calm.
“I have nothing to hide.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“People who say that usually do.””
For the first time, Robert looked annoyed.
She examined the document carefully.
Then she pointed at the signature.
“This isn’t Sarah’s signature.””
I exhaled.
I already knew.
But hearing someone else say it mattered.
Robert shrugged.
“Prove it.””
Rebecca looked at me.
“I can.””
Then she looked at Jason.
“But we need the original files.””
Jason frowned.
“What files?””
Rebecca opened her laptop.
“The digital records.””
Everyone went silent.
She explained.
“Documents like this leave a trail. Creation date. Editing history. User access.””
Robert’s confidence weakened.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Rebecca noticed.
“Who prepared this document?””
Nobody answered.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
A picture appeared.
It was a screenshot of a computer file.
The sender had written:
*“You’re looking in the wrong place.””*
I stared at the image.
It showed the document history.
And the creator’s name.
Not Robert.
Not Jason.
Not Diane.
Someone else.
Someone I knew.
My hands started shaking.
Rebecca looked over.
“What is it?””
I turned the phone toward her.
Her expression changed.
“No…”
Jason stepped closer.
“Who?””
I whispered the name.
“Mark.””
Everyone froze.
Jason looked like he had been punched.
“My brother?””
I nodded.
The man who had walked into my house pretending to help.
The man who warned me about destroying the family.
The man who had carried the documents.
He wasn’t just involved.
He had created them.
Then another message arrived.
This time, there was no image.
Only words.
*“Ask Jason why his brother really wanted custody of Noah.””*
I looked at Jason.
Slowly.
“Why?””
He looked terrified.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“Tell me.””
He sat down.
And for the first time since this nightmare began…
He looked afraid of the truth.
“Because Mark…”
He stopped.
I waited.
“Because Mark isn’t just my brother.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“What does that mean?””
Jason looked at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“He’s Noah’s biological grandfather.””
