Chapter 3: The Paper They Never Wanted Me To See

The room felt smaller after those words.

Someone attempted to transfer ownership.

My house.

The place I bought before Jason and I were even married.

The place where I brought Noah home from the hospital.

The place where my mother had spent countless nights helping me build a life.

I stared at Jason.

He couldn’t look me in the eyes.

“Jason,” I said slowly, “tell me I misunderstood.””

He said nothing.

That hurt more than an answer.

My attorney continued.

“Sarah, I need you to come into the office tomorrow morning. There are documents that appear to have been submitted without your authorization.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Without my authorization?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Diane.

She suddenly became very interested in cleaning the fruit bowl.

“Thank you. I’ll be there.””

I ended the call.

Jason immediately stepped forward.

“You’re making assumptions.””

I laughed.

“Am I?””

“You don’t know everything.””

“Then explain.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Diane finally spoke.

“Jason was only trying to protect the family.””

I turned toward her.

“By selling my house?””

She became defensive.

“It wasn’t selling.””

“Then what was it?””

She looked at Jason.

That was enough.

I grabbed the stack of papers from the counter.

“Where are the rest of the documents?””

Nobody answered.

I walked toward Jason’s office.

He followed quickly.

“Sarah, stop.””

I turned around.

“Why?””

His face was tense.

“Because you’re angry.””

“No.””

I held up the papers.

“I’m awake.””

That made him silent.

I opened the office door.

The room looked different.

Not messy.

Not suspicious.

Just different.

Like someone had been searching through my things.

The filing cabinet was slightly open.

I walked toward it.

Jason grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.””

I looked down at his hand.

Then at his face.

Slowly, he let go.

“Why don’t you want me to see what’s inside?””

He looked terrified.

That was when I knew.

I opened the cabinet.

Inside were folders.

Bank statements.

Insurance documents.

And one folder with my name written across it.

I pulled it out.

The first page made my heart stop.

It was a copy of a document involving my house.

But the signature at the bottom wasn’t mine.

I looked closer.

Then I saw another signature.

Jason’s.

My voice became quiet.

“You forged my name?””

Jason shook his head.

“No, Sarah. You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He stepped closer.

“Your mother was never supposed to find out.””

My entire body went cold.

I looked toward the doorway.

Mom was standing there holding Noah.

Her face was pale.

“What did you say?””

Jason froze.

Diane immediately stepped between us.

“Everyone needs to calm down.””

But Mom’s eyes were fixed on Jason.

“You said she wasn’t supposed to find out?””

Jason looked trapped.

I held the document tighter.

“What else did you hide from me?””

Nobody answered.

Then Noah started crying.

Mom hugged him closer.

And from inside the folder, something slipped out and fell onto the floor.

A photograph.

I picked it up.

It was Jason standing outside a bank.

Beside him was another person.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who had no reason to be involved.

I looked at the picture.

Then I whispered the name.

“Diane…”

My mother’s face changed.

Because she knew something I didn’t.

And before anyone could speak, the front door opened.

A man’s voice called from the hallway.

“Jason? Did you fix the problem?””

Everyone froze.

I looked toward the door.

May you like

Because I knew that voice.

It belonged to the person who was never supposed to know about my house.
