Chapter 14: The Truth About Noah

I didn’t leave.

Not because I trusted Jason.

Because I needed the truth.

I had spent months believing I knew my family.

Now every memory felt like a question.

“Jason.””

He sat across from me.

“Tell me.””

He looked exhausted.

“There is something I never told you.””

I shook my head.

“That sentence should be printed on your forehead.””

He closed his eyes.

“I found out before we got married.””

“Found out what?””

“That Noah’s biological family was connected to Mark.””

I stared at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

I stood.

“Afraid of what?””

He looked at me.

“Losing you.””

The answer made me angry.

“You don’t get to protect a marriage by hiding the truth.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice broke.

“You made decisions about my son without me.””

Jason looked down.

“I thought I could handle it.””

“You couldn’t.””

“I know.””

That was the first honest thing he had said.

Rebecca sat quietly, taking notes.

Then she asked:

“Jason, I need the complete timeline.””

He nodded.

“My first wife had Noah’s biological connection through her family. After she passed away, Mark became obsessed with keeping Noah close.””

I frowned.

“But Noah is my son.””

Jason nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why did Mark think he had rights?””

“Because he believed blood mattered more than anything else.””

I looked at him.

“And you?””

Jason looked ashamed.

“I let him convince me.””

The pain of that answer was worse than anger.

Because Jason didn’t need to be forced.

He chose.

Then Rebecca received an email.

She opened it.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Mark filed another document today.””

My heart sank.

“What document?””

She turned the laptop.

A temporary custody request.

Filed that morning.

My hands trembled.

“He did this while we were talking?””

Rebecca nodded.

“He’s moving quickly.””

Jason stood.

“He knows we found out.””

I looked at him.

“What does he want?””

Jason whispered:

“Control.””

The word hung in the air.

Then Rebecca noticed something else.

“Wait.””

She zoomed in.

“This filing has an attachment.””

“What is it?””

She opened the file.

A photograph appeared.

It was me.

Holding Noah.

Taken inside my own house.

I felt sick.

“They watched us.””

Jason looked horrified.

But then Rebecca pointed at the date.

“This was taken before the camera was installed.””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

She stared at the screen.

“Someone had access before Mark.””

The room went silent.

A terrifying thought entered my mind.

Someone close.

Someone who had keys.

Someone who knew our routine.

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

No number.

No name.

Just a photo.

It was a picture of my mother.

At the grocery store.

Taken that morning.

Below it were five words:

*“You should have listened.””*

I stood up.

“They’re watching my mother.””

Jason grabbed his keys.

“We need to get her.””

But before we reached the door…

Rebecca’s phone rang.

She answered.

Then her face changed.

“What?””

She listened.

Then slowly looked at me.

“Sarah…”

I knew.

I knew before she spoke.

“What happened?””

May you like

Rebecca lowered the phone.

“Your mother is gone.””
