Chapter 9: My Mother Knew

I couldn’t move.

The ballroom noise faded.

The executives.

The whispers.

The accusations.

Everything disappeared.

There was only the letter in my hands.

My mother’s handwriting.

Her voice.

Her warning.

I read the first sentence again.

*My dearest Sarah, if you are reading this, then the man you married has already betrayed you.*

My fingers tightened around the paper.

My father stood beside me.

“Sarah?””

I looked at him.

“I need a minute.””

Nobody argued.

For once, nobody told me what to do.

I stepped away from the crowd and began reading.

Sarah,

If this letter reaches you, something I prayed would never happen has happened.

You trusted someone who saw your kindness as weakness.

My throat tightened.

Because it sounded exactly like my mother.

She always saw things before I did.

*Daniel Mercer is intelligent. Charming. Ambitious.

Those qualities can be valuable. But ambition without honesty becomes dangerous.*

I looked across the room.

Daniel was watching me.

For the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.

Not anger.

Not arrogance.

Fear.

I continued.

Before you married him, I asked your father to investigate his family. Not because I wanted to control your life, but because I knew people often show their true character when money is involved.

My father looked surprised.

He didn’t know.

Not everything.

I discovered that the Mercer family had been struggling financially for years. Daniel was not looking for a partner. He was looking for a solution.

I closed my eyes.

A painful truth.

A truth I had spent years avoiding.

Daniel had never chosen me first.

He had chosen what came with me.

Behind me, I heard footsteps.

“Sarah.””

I didn’t look up.

“Don’t.””

Daniel stopped.

“I need to talk to you.””

“No.””

“Please.””

I folded the letter carefully.

“You had years to talk to me.””

Silence.

Then he whispered:

“I did love you.””

I finally looked at him.

“Maybe.””

His expression changed.

“But love isn’t proven by what you feel.””

I held the letter.

“It’s proven by what you do.””

Daniel looked down.

That was the first time I saw him look like a man who understood he had lost something.

Not a company.

Not money.

Me.

Olivia approached quietly.

“Your mother wanted you to have this when you were ready.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“She asked me to wait.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew you would ignore it if you received it too soon.””

I almost smiled sadly.

That sounded like my mother.

She knew me.

Better than anyone.

My father joined us.

“What else does the letter say?””

I looked down.

There was more.

Sarah, there is something you need to understand. The Mercer situation is not the biggest danger.

My heart tightened.

Not the biggest danger.

Daniel is not the only person who knows about your trust.

I looked at my father.

Someone inside our family has been feeding information to him.

My blood ran cold.

Inside our family.

My father read my expression.

“What?””

I handed him the letter.

He read silently.

Then his face changed.

“Impossible.””

“What?””

He looked up.

“Your mother suspected someone close to us.””

“Who?””

He kept reading.

Then stopped.

“What?””

I asked again.

He didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

Finally, he handed the letter back.

At the bottom of the page, my mother had written one final sentence.

A name.

The name of the person she believed had betrayed us.

I read it.

And my entire world shifted.

Because it wasn’t Daniel.

It wasn’t Evelyn.

It wasn’t Thomas.

It was someone I had trusted my entire life.

Someone standing in that ballroom.

Someone who had just told me they were protecting me.

My father.

I looked up slowly.

May you like

And for the first time that night, I wondered if the person who came to save me…

was the person I needed saving from.
