Chapter 12: The Truth About My Mother

Nobody spoke.

Thomas’s words hung over the ballroom.

“The person who taught Daniel how to do it.””

Everyone looked at my father.

I did too.

My father didn’t defend himself.

That scared me.

Because the man who always had an answer suddenly had none.

“Dad?””

He looked at me.

Pain filled his eyes.

“Sarah…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I need the truth.””

Thomas smiled slightly.

“There it is.””

My father looked at him.

“Don’t.””

Thomas ignored him.

“Your father and I built this family’s success together.””

I frowned.

“You said he betrayed you.””

Thomas laughed softly.

“He did.””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“And you betrayed everyone.””

The room went quiet again.

I looked between them.

“What happened?””

Thomas walked closer.

“Your mother discovered that your father and I disagreed about the future of the family business.””

My father interrupted.

“That’s not what happened.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Tell her.””

My father stayed silent.

I felt my patience disappearing.

“Tell me.””

Finally, my father spoke.

“Thomas wanted to use your trust as leverage.””

My stomach tightened.

“My trust?””

“Yes.””

“To do what?””

“To take control of several companies connected to our family.””

Thomas smiled.

“And your father wanted the same thing.””

My father’s expression changed.

“Not like that.””

“Everyone says that when they lose.””

I looked at Thomas.

“Why are you here?””

His smile faded.

“Because I’m tired of watching people lie to you.””

I almost laughed.

“You?””

“Yes.””

“The man who has been hiding for years?””

His expression hardened.

“You don’t know the full story.””

“Then tell me.””

He looked at my father.

Then at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“Your mother discovered Daniel’s plan before she died.””

I froze.

“We know that.””

“No.””

Thomas shook his head.

“She discovered more.””

He reached into his coat.

And removed a small envelope.

My heart raced.

Another letter.

Another secret.

“Your mother gave this to me.””

My father stepped forward.

“Where did you get that?””

Thomas looked at him.

“She trusted me.””

“No,” my father said.

His voice cracked.

“She didn’t.””

Thomas smiled.

“She did enough.””

I took the envelope.

The handwriting was familiar.

My mother’s.

Again.

I opened it carefully.

This time, the letter was shorter.

Sarah,

If Thomas gives you this letter, understand one thing: he is not innocent.

I looked up.

Thomas’s expression changed.

I continued reading.

But neither is your father.

My breath caught.

The next lines were worse.

The person who hurts you is not always your enemy. Sometimes it is the person who loves you but believes they have the right to control your life.

I looked at my father.

His eyes were wet.

My mother knew.

She knew all of them.

Your father made mistakes because he was afraid. Thomas made mistakes because he was ambitious. Daniel made mistakes because he was selfish.

I stopped.

Then read the final sentence.

But Sarah, the greatest danger is the person who convinces everyone they are protecting you while secretly protecting themselves.

The letter ended there.

No name.

No answer.

Just a warning.

I looked up.

“Who?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Claire stepped forward.

“Sarah.””

I turned.

She looked at the executives.

Then at the documents.

“There’s something else.””

My heart sank.

“What now?””

She took a folder from the table.

“This was found in Daniel’s private office.””

Daniel looked alarmed.

“What?””

Claire opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Emails.

Records.

And one final document.

She handed it to me.

I read the title.

*Final Beneficiary Transfer Agreement.*

My hands shook.

“Beneficiary?””

Claire nodded.

“It shows who would receive everything after the ownership changes.””

I looked at the signature.

Not Daniel’s.

Not Evelyn’s.

Not Thomas’s.

A different name.

A name that made every piece finally connect.

Because the person who would inherit Mercer Industries after my removal…

was the person I trusted most in the world.

May you like

And standing across from me, watching me discover the truth…

was my father.
