Chapter 7: The Person Behind the Plan
The message remained on the screen.
One sentence.
One warning.
One question that changed everything.
*You think Daniel and Evelyn were the only ones planning against you?*
I read it again.
Then a third time.
My fingers felt cold.
“Dad,” I whispered.
He took the phone from my hand and studied the number.
“Do you recognize it?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What message?””
My father immediately locked the screen.
“None of your concern.””
Daniel laughed.
A nervous laugh.
“You walk into my company, accuse me of things, and now you’re hiding information from me?””
I looked at him.
“Your company?””
The words hung between us.
Daniel’s face tightened.
He realized what he had said.
Again.
Always revealing more than he intended.
Claire walked closer.
“Sarah, maybe we should leave before this gets worse.””
I looked around the ballroom.
The party was destroyed.
The decorations were still perfect.
The champagne glasses were still lined up.
The music was still ready to play.
But everything else was broken.
Especially the image Daniel had spent years creating.
I turned to my father.
“Who sent the message?””
“I don’t know yet.””
“You said you came here because you knew something was wrong.””
He nodded.
“I received information yesterday.””
“What kind of information?””
My father hesitated.
That worried me.
My father never hesitated.
“Financial irregularities.””
Daniel immediately spoke.
“This is absurd.””
My father ignored him.
“Transfers. Hidden accounts. Unauthorized agreements.””
My eyes moved toward Daniel.
“Hidden accounts?””
He looked angry.
“You’re making accusations.””
“No,” my father said.
“I’m asking questions.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“You have no idea what you’re interfering with.””
My father looked at her.
“I know exactly what I’m interfering with.””
Something about his tone made her stop.
For the first time, Evelyn looked uncertain.
Then my phone buzzed.
Everyone looked at it.
Another message.
Same unknown number.
I opened it.
*Ask Daniel why he met with your uncle three months ago.*
My heart dropped.
My uncle.
Thomas Bennett.
My father’s younger brother.
The man who had disappeared from our family years ago.
I looked at my father.
“Do you know what this means?””
His expression changed.
“Show me.””
I handed him the phone.
He read the message.
Then his face became unreadable.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
“Who is Uncle Thomas?””
Daniel suddenly looked away.
That was enough.
I noticed.
My father noticed too.
“Daniel.””
Daniel stayed silent.
My father’s voice became sharper.
“What does Thomas Bennett have to do with this?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I can explain.””
I almost laughed.
That sentence had become the soundtrack of the worst night of my life.
“Explain.””
Daniel looked at me.
Then at my father.
“Thomas approached me.””
My father stepped forward.
“For what?””
Daniel hesitated.
“To discuss opportunities.””
My stomach tightened.
“What opportunities?””
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
He sighed.
“He said there was a way to restructure ownership.””
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“Meaning?””
Daniel looked down.
“Meaning if certain people lost control, the company could be sold.””
The ballroom went silent.
“Certain people,” I repeated.
“Me?””
Daniel didn’t respond.
That was his answer.
I looked at my father.
“Your brother wanted this?””
My father’s expression darkened.
“Thomas has always believed everything has a price.””
I looked back at Daniel.
“And you listened to him?””
Daniel’s voice softened.
“I was trying to protect the company.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
He didn’t argue.
Because he knew.
My father took a deep breath.
“Sarah, we need to leave.””
I nodded.
For the first time all night, leaving sounded like freedom.
But as we turned toward the entrance, Daniel spoke.
“Sarah.””
I stopped.
I didn’t turn around.
“Before you walk away, you should know something.””
My hand tightened.
“What?””
His voice was quieter.
“Your uncle wasn’t the one who contacted me first.””
I slowly turned.
Daniel looked terrified.
“Then who was?””
He looked directly at me.
And said a name I never expected.
“Your mother.””
The room disappeared.
May you like
My father went completely still.
Because my mother had been dead for seven years.
